Jenn Sterger: Hoboken’s latest celebrity

12

August

8/12/2008:

Look out! Hoboken has a new celebrity: Jenn Sterger!

From NYJets.com:

Jenn Sterger Set for ‘Sassy’ Jets Role

hoboken-jenn-sterger-ny-jets-1.jpgJenn Sterger, a southern girl with flair, is taking her act to New York. In an effort to improve their gameday experience, the New York Jets have hired Sterger as the club’s gameday host.

“It will be fun. It’s going to be sassy,” Jenn told me recently of her new role. “I plan on fully embracing my new role as a New Yorker.”

In her new position, she will interview celebrities and will host a pregame “Keys to the Game” segment and the club’s pregame components up until player introductions. She’ll also play a role during TV timeouts and at halftime.

“I thought it was a great project. I think it’s really cool that you guys are trying to integrate a new kind of media into your gameday experience,” she said. “It’s going to be fun and more interactive for fans. If it gets them in the seats earlier and out of the freezing parking lots a couple of beers earlier maybe, so be it. I promise I’ll put on as good a show as I possibly can.”

Less than three years ago — Sept. 15, 2005, to be exact — an unknown ABC cameraman panned in Jenn’s direction and play-by-play man Brent Musburger offered a famous line:

“Fifteen hundred red-blooded Americans just decided to apply to Florida State.”

And right there, Jenn Sterger met the nation. Turns out she was more than just a pretty face, though — this Seminole majored in criminology and psychology. She was interested in law but FSU didn’t offer a prelaw major.

hoboken-jenn-sterger-ny-jets-2.jpgSo if Brent doesn’t spot JS, where is she now?

“I’d probably be in law school actually trying to take Drew Rosenhaus’ job,” she said of the South Florida superagent. “That’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a sports agent. First I wanted to be an attorney, and then I decided I didn’t want to argue with people for a living. Then I was like maybe if I was doing it for sports and it was something I was passionate about, I’d feel differently.”

A few months back, E! Entertainment ran a program titled “20 Hottest Women of the Web.” Jenn ranked No. 19 on the list. She’s turned into quite the entrepreneur the past couple of years.

“I did a weekly advice column for CNN/SI and then I started doing their road trips. I was one of their pioneers in their Web video,” she explained. “It was really cool. Going to visit different campuses was like going to college without the homework.

“I’m working on several projects now and a buddy of mine who’s in the industry was like, ‘I really would like to have you in my movie.’ So I’ve actually shot one movie already [a scary flick, “The Tenant”] and then I’m getting ready to go out there to shoot another one in the next week or two. I’m also going to shoot another special for E.”

Here’s a video of her describing her celebrity status, and the problems associated with her “Boobs.”

But Jenn is a genuine football fan who has attended multiple Jets home games in the past few years. She grew up in Tampa and remembers going to Buccaneers games with her father when the Bucs weren’t experiencing all that much success.

“I was a Buccaneers fan when they were the ‘creamsicles,’ ” she says with a playful laugh. “The Big Sombrero [otherwise known as Tampa Stadium] — that was a tin can of a stadium.”

This Saturday, Jenn makes her off-Broadway debut at the Meadowlands. She’ll make the short drive over to take the microphone on what will be an exciting night as Brett Favre makes his first Jets home appearance.

“I’m actually staying in Hoboken in New Jersey and I love my place,” she said. “I have the best view ever. You wake up to the Empire State Building and you’re just like ‘Good morning.’ ”

hoboken-jenn-sterger-ny-jets-old-florida-state-picture.jpg

Some might be interested in what outfit JS is going to wear, but I have no idea. It should come as no surprise that she’s got something creative up her sleeve.

“Strictly customized,” she says with that trademark smile. “They gave me some really cool stuff to wear from the team store and whatnot, but I’ll fix it the way I like it.”

I tell her that in years past we’ve had some late-arriving crowds. We’ve got a great fanbase, but they’re big tailgaters, traffic can be brutal, plus they’re building a beautiful New Jets Stadium so there’s construction everywhere.

“It’s not just the Jets. Trust me,” she says of the arrivals. “Hell, if they can find parking, they’re happy. It’s New York in general, it’s not just Jets fans. I hope people take the time to check out the new entertainment that they bring in.”

Jenn’s pumped for Jets football. The sassy southerner makes the jump to the pros this weekend.

“I’m trying to become a little less southern, a little less gentle and a little more Jersey, I guess you could say. I’ll try my best,” she said. “People up here always tell me I’m too nice, so hopefully Jets fans can make me a little stronger.

“Plus I look great in the green.”

(Thanks to Hoboken411 reader David for the tip!)

    7/31/2008:

manny-ramirez-boston-red-sox-trade-2.jpgAs many of you probably already know, there is lots of action & rumors brewing up as the MLB trade deadline approaches this afternoon. The biggest one being Boston’s Manny Ramirez.

Even if I was a big Red Sox fan, I wouldn’t like Ramirez. Cocky, arrogant, and lazy. Some ESPN commentators said Boston would be stupid to trade away his “production” at the plate, and would be unable to fill his spot in the lineup.

    From ESPN:

“The Red Sox don’t deserve a player like me,” Ramirez said. “During my years here, I’ve seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn’t want them to try to turn the fans against them.

“The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy,” Ramirez added. “I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don’t deserve me. I’m not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don’t have peace here.”

    My thoughts about Manny Ramirez:

    7/21/2008:

I’ve always been a big Yankees fan, but my “work” (as some people jab me about) has caused me to be less “analytical” about baseball in general for the past two years. No more Fantasy Teams, no betting, in fact, hardly attended any games (except for one or two..)!

But what are your outlooks for the second half of the season, for both the Yanks and the Mets?

    New York Yankees

yankees-joba-chamberlain.jpgMany folks believe this will be the first year (in like what, 100?) that the Yankees don’t make the playoffs. Judging by the way they’ve been playing recently, I think they have a strong chance of making at least the wild-card spot. Tampa Bay is faltering and Boston isn’t playing up to par either. Depending on how the three top AL East teams do this week, the Yankees have a fairly good chance of making some real progress come this weekend, when they square up against their most-hated rivals.

TB has Oakland and Kansas City this week, and you can chalk them up for perhaps three or four wins. Boston has Oakland, who NY just swept, so expect them to take at least two out of three (depending on how angry Oakland is.) So come this weekend, the Yanks square off for a meaningful three-game series in Boston, where taking at least two of three is paramount.

(And what’s the deal with Joba Chamerlain getting such little run support?)

How do you think this week will pan out?

    New York Mets

mets-david-wright.jpgThe Mets have been playing great ball the past month (going on a 10-game winning streak), while the rival Phillies have not, gaining four games in the standings and tying them for first (as of today).

The two teams match up for an important three-game series this week, then the Mets meet up with contender Florida, while the Phils play mediocre Atlanta.

What do you think the standings will look like this time next week?

    5/2/2008:

The Kentucky Derby, one of the biggest horse races of the year takes place this Saturday, May 3rd at 6pm.

    kentucky-derby-2008.jpg

A Hoboken411 reader wondered at what bar he can watch the pre-race coverage. I’m fairly certain that Three-A’s usually has the audio on for that, and am pretty certain that many of the smaller pubs would turn the audio on for this. Does anyone know some other places that plan to promote the race?

Also, here’s a quick poll. I took the top 5 odds (from bodoglife.com)…

hoboken-hockey-nhl-devils-rangers.gifTotally forgot to mention this last week.

Any NHL Hockey fans out there? Hoboken411 reader (and NJ Devils fan) Mark suggested starting a topic about two of our local hockey teams facing off in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs (being dubbed the “PATH Series” - Because you can essentially take the train between the two arenas).

He wondered if a majority of the Hoboken, NJ residents would be supporting the state team, or the NY Rangers.

Anyway, the Devils won last night in Overtime, and trail in the series two games to one.

Baseball season may have already started, but not in New York!

This Hoboken resident couldn’t me more excited about it. Although I’ll only probably have time to “Ctrl-Tab” between Firefox screens, it’ll be nice to see a live boxscore finally!

Today’s Yankees opener this afternoon (1:05pm) at the Stadium shouldn’t be rained out, and will pit Chien-Ming Wang against Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays. While the Mets and new ace Johan Santana opens up in balmy Miami against the Florida Marlins at 4:10pm. Today is a historic day in the Bronx, because it’s the last ever opening-day in the house that Ruth built.

Good luck to both teams, and may we see you in October!

hoboken-mets-yankees-mlb-baseball-2008.jpgBaseball is essentially a year-long event, with almost more action in the off-season than during the regular season. But it’s time to dust off your mitts, and get ready for six solid months of box scores, injuries, controversies and more.

I’m a lifelong Yankees fan, and have suffered a pretty long World Series drought (for us at least.)

My prediction is that both the Mets and the Yankees will finish first in their respective divisions. I believe the press under-estimates the power of the Yanks lineup, and think (hope) the pitching rotation & bullpen surprise all the doubters. Of course I’m biased and have used zero scientific or statistical analysis in making such a prediction. Call it a hunch.

Here are a couple pretty decent articles from the Bleacher Report about the NL East and AL East to read as well.
