    3/12/2010 Update / Review:

Note: Updated menu with some revisions plus “international sandwiches!”

    Consistently good!

Have you tried Dino Sandwich Cafe at 614 Washington yet?

I stopped by shortly after they opened a few weeks ago, and I’m curiously impressed with what they’re doing over there. From the incredibly organized and labeled shelves, utensils and walls – to the interesting bread, pastries and most of all – delicious bacon!

Dino Sandwich Cafe Menu (Updated March 2010)

Since my first visit, I must have had at least 15 sandwiches. Here’s a quick bullet point first impression:

    • Bacon. Like I said already, the bacon is tasty, and they give a decent portion (specifically on the BLT)
    • Consistent. The sandwiches are always stuffed “just right.” Never felt like I got ripped off.
    • Unique Bread. These “dutch” rolls have some kind of crispy rice coating. You can’t find this anywhere else in Hoboken.
    • Great egg sandwiches. Haven’t tried the “omelet” version yet, but the standard Bacon, Egg & Cheese was super. You can up-size from the round roll to the longer dutch roll for $0.50 extra.
    • Panini sandwiches. You might feel that they’re a bit “small” for the money, but they have a fair amount of meat, and the bread was great (they sell them in mini loaves up front – 5 or 6 slices).
    • Free beverages with all sandwiches. You get a free coffee during breakfast, and a free can of soda or water with all lunch sandwiches. Helps lessen the sting of a $7.25 sandwich.
    • Great pastries. They get them from a bakery in Fort Lee.
    • Soups not bad. Liked the Chili soup, but was a bit heavy on the beans. The Chicken noodle was very basic, but was mostly broth. Hard to screw up soup (unless you charge an arm and a leg like the doomed Soup Man.)
    • Other notables: The grilled chicken sandwich with greek sauce was a hit, as well as the “apple slaw” (Asian version of Cole Slaw). Coffee was halfway decent as well.
    • Still to try: The Salads and the wraps.
    • Gone: The “TV Dinners” they originally had have been discontinued due to lack of interest. Perhaps if they called them “iTunes Dinners” or “Facebook Dinners” people would have ordered them.

Sometime you just like an establishment – and cannot exactly put your finger on it. I’m not sure if it’s the visual menu, the ADD / OCD organization, the labeling of everything, the fancy pearl-white touch-screen cash register, or what.

All I know is that I’m happy each time I order from Dino – and that keeps me coming back. The owner is a very nice guy as well.

PS – they told me it’s not pronounced “Dino” (as in Dino from the Flinstone’s), but rather “Dino” as in (Dino in Dinosaur). After they said that, I came up with their marketing slogan in case they ever make a commercial. “Hey honey, what’s for dinner? I know – Dino!”

Alternate Review: One student from Stevens Institute also reviewed Dino, but gave it a less than stellar review, based on value and the relative average taste they had. They didn’t try many items from the menu like 411 (or the bacon!)

Aroma Chinese rumored to be moving

Oh boy! The second “word on the street is…” post today!

I overheard that it’s NOT Windmill Hot Dogs and Hamburgers coming to the old Frozen Monkey Location at 526 Washington Street – but rather Aroma Chinese (which is currently located at 318 Washington).

There have been some issues with Aroma in the past week or two – not sure if they’re structural, or landlord issues – just telling you guys what I heard! The “Real Estate Wheel of Fortune” spins pretty quick in Hoboken these days!

No, please don’t let this happen!

Word on the street is that the next “big box” store to fill the space at the Barnes & Noble will be….

    Staples.

With one just walking distance away in Jersey City, NJ – would you approve or disapprove of this? What would you rather see?

Would you like to see Staples come to Hoboken?

    3/1/2010 Update:

Is downtown really a better retail location?

Hoboken411 reader Heidi sent in this tip that Platform Soul Shoes at 716 Washington (who’s sister store is Air Studios at 55 First Street) – is moving into the old Choice Properties location (100 Bloomfield Street) across the street from Buskers.

Also – the name is apparently changing to just “Platform.”

I’m assuming they moved downtown because the rent was cheaper? But don’t uptown residents have a bit more “buying power?”

Description – Womens shoes moved from midtown to downtown March 2010.
Services – Michael Kors, Chloe, specialty sneakers from Puma.
Address – 716 Washington 100 Bloomfield Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030

Park & Sixth Update February 2010

We’re back again with this month’s “what’s hot” at Park & Sixth update! The top 5 items, plus some fun info about Fresh Mozz!

See their menu here – or click the image below.

Park and Sixth Comfort Food Hoboken NJ new Menu 2010

Whats hot at Park & Sixth this month?

    1. The Fresh mozzarella
    2. The Havana
    3. The Roasted Tomato Chipotle Soup
    4. The Park & Sixth Brisket Sandwich
    5. The NEW Meatloaf Muzz and Gravy Sandwich (Special)

A Fresh Mutz newbie? No way!

“I had never made fresh Mozzarella before I opened Park & Sixth Comfort Food. Yes, its true. I didn’t know a curd from a cotton ball but I knew If I were to open a store in Hoboken I’d better learn, learn quickly and rightly. Because Hoboken is the land of Fresh Muzz. So, my brother and I spent three months working out the details—how finely the curds should be broken down, water temperature, salt content and so on. And aside from burning our hands and laughing a lot we developed, what we consider, great fresh mozzarella.

    Here’s how we do it:

First a block of Mozzarella curd is broken down into fine pieces about the size of raisins. We fluff the little pieces of curd up with our hands something akin to fluffing cooked rice with a fork to allow for open pockets of air. This step is crucial when the hot salty water is poured over the curd. It allows the salty water to penetrate the curds and makes for a perfect marriage of cheese to salt.

Once the hot water melts the curds into an amorphous congealed mass sitting in salty walter we use a paddle to stretch the curd much like a candy maker stretches saltwater taffy. What was once a block of curd broken down into little pieces is now a silky ribbon of awesomeness. We form the balls about the size of baseballs and lay them into very cold, but not ice cold, water so they set properly. In a sense shocking them into place.

So, come on in to Park & Sixth we’d be happy to give you a taste!

    Brian

    What’s Hot at Park & Sixth – January 2010
I always want to know what everyone else is ordering, so I asked them for a list of their hottest selling items, plus a little background on #1!

    1. The Park & Sixth Braised Brisket Sandwich
    2. The Philly Cheese Steak Spring Roll
    3. The Buffalo Soldier
    4. The Eli Manning
    5. Fresh Mozzarella

The Park and Sixth Braised Brisket Sandwich
Here’s what the owner has to say about the most popular item on the menu (man am I hungry now!)

“When I sat down to write the sandwich menu for Park & Sixth Comfort Food I knew I had to incorporate braised brisket somewhere. Little did I know it would be our signature sandwich.

I am a man consumed by braising. Braising is sexy. Perhaps because the process involves taking a less desirable “peasant” cut of meat with the consistency of an old shoe and morphing it into tender deliciousness, the proverbial frog into a prince as it were.

Braising is a cooking technique that requires a fattier cut of meat to be cooked over a long period of time over low heat. It is actually quite simple, but requires considerable time to gather and prepare the ingredients.

Our briskets braise in the oven for five hours at 300 degrees in a red wine based sauce, which later becomes the “Crazy Gravy” on the Park & Sixth Brisket Sandwich.

If you don’t have the time to braise…. we’ll do it for you. At Park & Sixth we braise five briskets a day and it is by far the most popular item on the menu.”
