    3/12/2010 Update / Review:

Note: Updated menu with some revisions plus “international sandwiches!”

    Consistently good!

Have you tried Dino Sandwich Cafe at 614 Washington yet?

I stopped by shortly after they opened a few weeks ago, and I’m curiously impressed with what they’re doing over there. From the incredibly organized and labeled shelves, utensils and walls – to the interesting bread, pastries and most of all – delicious bacon!

Dino Sandwich Cafe Menu (Updated March 2010)

Since my first visit, I must have had at least 15 sandwiches. Here’s a quick bullet point first impression:

    • Bacon. Like I said already, the bacon is tasty, and they give a decent portion (specifically on the BLT)
    • Consistent. The sandwiches are always stuffed “just right.” Never felt like I got ripped off.
    • Unique Bread. These “dutch” rolls have some kind of crispy rice coating. You can’t find this anywhere else in Hoboken.
    • Great egg sandwiches. Haven’t tried the “omelet” version yet, but the standard Bacon, Egg & Cheese was super. You can up-size from the round roll to the longer dutch roll for $0.50 extra.
    • Panini sandwiches. You might feel that they’re a bit “small” for the money, but they have a fair amount of meat, and the bread was great (they sell them in mini loaves up front – 5 or 6 slices).
    • Free beverages with all sandwiches. You get a free coffee during breakfast, and a free can of soda or water with all lunch sandwiches. Helps lessen the sting of a $7.25 sandwich.
    • Great pastries. They get them from a bakery in Fort Lee.
    • Soups not bad. Liked the Chili soup, but was a bit heavy on the beans. The Chicken noodle was very basic, but was mostly broth. Hard to screw up soup (unless you charge an arm and a leg like the doomed Soup Man.)
    • Other notables: The grilled chicken sandwich with greek sauce was a hit, as well as the “apple slaw” (Asian version of Cole Slaw). Coffee was halfway decent as well.
    • Still to try: The Salads and the wraps.
    • Gone: The “TV Dinners” they originally had have been discontinued due to lack of interest. Perhaps if they called them “iTunes Dinners” or “Facebook Dinners” people would have ordered them.

Sometime you just like an establishment – and cannot exactly put your finger on it. I’m not sure if it’s the visual menu, the ADD / OCD organization, the labeling of everything, the fancy pearl-white touch-screen cash register, or what.

All I know is that I’m happy each time I order from Dino – and that keeps me coming back. The owner is a very nice guy as well.

PS – they told me it’s not pronounced “Dino” (as in Dino from the Flinstone’s), but rather “Dino” as in (Dino in Dinosaur). After they said that, I came up with their marketing slogan in case they ever make a commercial. “Hey honey, what’s for dinner? I know – Dino!”

Alternate Review: One student from Stevens Institute also reviewed Dino, but gave it a less than stellar review, based on value and the relative average taste they had. They didn’t try many items from the menu like 411 (or the bacon!)

Park & Sixth Update February 2010

We’re back again with this month’s “what’s hot” at Park & Sixth update! The top 5 items, plus some fun info about Fresh Mozz!

See their menu here – or click the image below.

Park and Sixth Comfort Food Hoboken NJ new Menu 2010

Whats hot at Park & Sixth this month?

    1. The Fresh mozzarella
    2. The Havana
    3. The Roasted Tomato Chipotle Soup
    4. The Park & Sixth Brisket Sandwich
    5. The NEW Meatloaf Muzz and Gravy Sandwich (Special)

A Fresh Mutz newbie? No way!

“I had never made fresh Mozzarella before I opened Park & Sixth Comfort Food. Yes, its true. I didn’t know a curd from a cotton ball but I knew If I were to open a store in Hoboken I’d better learn, learn quickly and rightly. Because Hoboken is the land of Fresh Muzz. So, my brother and I spent three months working out the details—how finely the curds should be broken down, water temperature, salt content and so on. And aside from burning our hands and laughing a lot we developed, what we consider, great fresh mozzarella.

    Here’s how we do it:

First a block of Mozzarella curd is broken down into fine pieces about the size of raisins. We fluff the little pieces of curd up with our hands something akin to fluffing cooked rice with a fork to allow for open pockets of air. This step is crucial when the hot salty water is poured over the curd. It allows the salty water to penetrate the curds and makes for a perfect marriage of cheese to salt.

Once the hot water melts the curds into an amorphous congealed mass sitting in salty walter we use a paddle to stretch the curd much like a candy maker stretches saltwater taffy. What was once a block of curd broken down into little pieces is now a silky ribbon of awesomeness. We form the balls about the size of baseballs and lay them into very cold, but not ice cold, water so they set properly. In a sense shocking them into place.

So, come on in to Park & Sixth we’d be happy to give you a taste!

    Brian

    What’s Hot at Park & Sixth – January 2010
I always want to know what everyone else is ordering, so I asked them for a list of their hottest selling items, plus a little background on #1!

    1. The Park & Sixth Braised Brisket Sandwich
    2. The Philly Cheese Steak Spring Roll
    3. The Buffalo Soldier
    4. The Eli Manning
    5. Fresh Mozzarella

The Park and Sixth Braised Brisket Sandwich
Here’s what the owner has to say about the most popular item on the menu (man am I hungry now!)

“When I sat down to write the sandwich menu for Park & Sixth Comfort Food I knew I had to incorporate braised brisket somewhere. Little did I know it would be our signature sandwich.

I am a man consumed by braising. Braising is sexy. Perhaps because the process involves taking a less desirable “peasant” cut of meat with the consistency of an old shoe and morphing it into tender deliciousness, the proverbial frog into a prince as it were.

Braising is a cooking technique that requires a fattier cut of meat to be cooked over a long period of time over low heat. It is actually quite simple, but requires considerable time to gather and prepare the ingredients.

Our briskets braise in the oven for five hours at 300 degrees in a red wine based sauce, which later becomes the “Crazy Gravy” on the Park & Sixth Brisket Sandwich.

If you don’t have the time to braise…. we’ll do it for you. At Park & Sixth we braise five briskets a day and it is by far the most popular item on the menu.”

    2/12/2010:

An exciting and diverse tour of Latin cuisine

How about a big Hoboken welcome for Ultramarinos, “The Marketplace for Latin Kitchen Magic!”

    Ultramarinos Hoboken NJ Exterior

Pronounced “OOL-TRAH-MAH-REE-NOS,” this new Latin food emporium at 260 3rd Street is what they call a “logical extention” to owners Marciel Presilla and Clara Chaumont’s two well-respected Hoboken restaurants Cucharamama and Zafra.

Occupying a space that had been vacant for over five years (was a flower shop and bakery in the past), this new marketplace is an exciting addition to Hoboken’s rather bland array of similar food establishments.

Prepared food, spices, coffee, cocoa, and more!

The interior of Ultramarinos definitely feels like an escape to another region, with nooks, crannies and all sorts of places to find products they sell. From Tamales, dried herbs and spices, preserves and cooking oils, to cookies, cakes, fruits and vegetables, it’s a very interesting collection of Spanish and Latin American products.

Still feeling a bit cold from the recent snowstorm we had, I tried a chocolate chip cookie ($1) and a cup of cocoa ($6). You might be thinking “$6 for hot cocoa? That must be a misprint!” Well, it’s not – and that had to be the best tasting hot chocolate I’ve ever tried. Dark Venezuelan chocolate, cinnamon, a dash of all-spice and other unique flavors made it a warming hot beverage you’d want to savor for eternity.

Open seven days a week, from 11am – 9pm, Ultramarinos will definitely be a spot I frequent often. So much to try!

They currently offer catering, and will introduce delivery at some point in the future. Check out their website at www.ultramarinos.biz

    1/26/2010 Update:

Grand Opening Celebration + initial review

Stacks Hoboken NJ Grand Opening Celebration January 26 2010In case you haven’t visited the new Stacks Pancake House (506 Washington) yet, you might want to swing by tonight!

They’re having their “official” grand opening celebration starting at 6:30pm tonight, where you can hob-nob with city officials, Stacks owners, and other curious residents and hungry bystanders.

Along with a Dave Roberts style ribbon cutting and champagne toast, the kitchen will be super-busy pumping out tons of free samples for you to try.

The nearest parking garage is at 3rd and Hudson Streets, and the event runs until around 9pm.

How’s the food and service so far?

I visited Stacks a couple times right after they opened, and tried my usual items along with some dishes I’d normally never order. As far as the aesthetics of the restaurant, I believe they did the best they could, considering the size and layout. Personally, I prefer cushy booth (“diner”) seating, but that wouldn’t be possible in this instance. Seating was comfortable and well made, so I had no real complaints.

Pretty good right off the line!

In my usual “bullet style” format – I present you with my initial opinion of the dishes we tried at Stacks:

    • Pancakes: I’ll start off by saying that I’m not a pancake fan. I’m a waffle guy – just prefer the texture. However, I tried the banana chocolate chip pancakes, along with the plain silver dollars, and the flavor made me re-think my long-standing feelings towards pancakes. I still will always order waffles, but the way they stuffed the pancakes with the fruit and other toppings was quite good.
    • Waffles: At first, I was highly disappointed, because the dish came out ice-cold. However, they apologized, and brought out a piping hot replacement within minutes. The waffle was delicious (keep in mind this is coming from a waffle-fanatic who loves all waffles, even Eggo).
    • Bacon Cheeseburger: My golden rule for reviewing most restaurants is “try the burger – if they screw that simple item up, etc…” and the first time I tried the bacon cheeseburger (which is TWO patties – enormous), I thought it was barely a step above regular diner burgers. Average at best. I told the owners this, and they tried one themselves, and actually agreed. So they immediately switched from pre-made patties to making them fresh themselves. I tried it again a week later, with a marked improvement. Is it the best burger in town? Nope, but definitely much better than the other diners, and a reliable option for the late-night munchies on weekends. Hey, they’re a pancake place!
    • Other items: A few other dishes we tasted were the Eggs Benedict “decent, but wish they had different Canadian bacon”; the Pancake Wrap “Massive, interesting, enough to feed TWO people – a novel concept”; Grilled Cheese Sandwich “pretty well done with gobs of cheese, too bad I didn’t order bacon on it. They should use more butter on the bread – we like it greasier”; French Fries “pretty basic fries, something reminds me of the boardwalk?”

Overall, one of the most important aspects for any restaurant or business for that matter – is customer service. The owners of Stacks strive to make their customers happy. And if you’re not satisfied, they will make amends without hesitation. That goes a long way in my opinion. While they work out the kinks with the menu and staff, they’ve been more than accommodating, and are already improving some of the dishes that may have been a little sub-par. I haven’t tried delivery yet, or their 24 hour days (Friday and Saturday nights) – so expect a followup update sometime soon.

What have your experiences been like at Stacks? With lines out the door, it seems like they’re doing something right in Hoboken!

    12/23/2009 Update:

I have to say, I swung by W. Kodak Jewelers yesterday because I was desperate to find a reliable watch-band repair place (after two failed tries elsewhere in Hoboken). Little did I know I’d have a nice local business update today – along with some superb photos taken by yours truly!

The nicest jewelry store in the Mile Square!

After being humbled by the beautiful merchandise in the window – I hesitantly walked in, hoping not to get me and my under-$200 watches laughed out of the store! But owner (and 10 year Hoboken resident) Brad Kodak happily took my job request, and showed me around.

I really liked the selection of men’s watches they had, including Movado, Panerai, and other very well known high-end brands. Maybe I’ll save really hard and treat myself next year, instead of wasting money on multiple others that end up breaking in less than a year anyway!

They also had a gorgeous array of ladies fine jewelry as well (if I was a woman, I’d want some diamonds too!) – and they have received phenomenal feedback – especially with the engagement rings!

Regardless if you need a last minute gift or not, be sure to stop by W. Kodak Jewelers to say hello – and shop local!

    8/14/2009 Update:

    Let the good times roll…

Wanted to update the Ganache Cafe entry today for two reasons:

    • To remind you that this is one of the most friendly independently-owned businesses in town (and has great coffee amongst other things…) and
    • Here is their New MENU of their offerings!

Ganache is one of the businesses you should go out of your way to support!

    4/21/2009 Update:

    Did you know?

That Ganache at the Hudson Tea Building (15th & Wash) has new owners?

Sisters Sanan and Stephanie took over the coffee shop and cafe back in December 2008 – and I’m now a regular customer of theirs!

They’re slowly making some changes, such as adding Ciao Bella Gelato – along with a new pastry chef (I still haven’t tried the cookies yet, which I hear are amazing!) You can still drop off your dry cleaning, sit in their comfortable furniture (which they re-arranged just a bit), and enjoy some tasty sandwiches.

My favorite part is the delicious coffee (Barrie House and Illy). I’ll go out of my way for a cup!

Hours are 7am-7pm M-F and 8am-6pm on weekends. Hours might get extended when the weather warms up.

Have you been to Ganache lately?
