6/30/2009 Update:
Now Open
Maroon quietly opened late last week. I snapped a photo of the completed interior - but the picture magically disappeared somehow (has that ever happened to you?)
Anyway - just imagine the place with chairs and cups and stuff. And for those that are “over” all the new yogurt places - they sell some ice cream by the scoop - along with chocolate bon-bons & pastries.
Taking place of the relatively dumpy (yet useful) Bill’s Candy Corner - is Maroon.
Ready to open any day now, Maroon is primarily a coffee/tea shop with an interesting bar-like layout. I believe some kind of food morsels might be offered, but I’m not sure - I spent a total of 10 seconds on this “drive-by” entry…

6/29/2009 Update:
Windmill emailed me back, saying:
“It is actually a bit off the corner in the building that was a dentist’s office. Construction has started up again and we hope to be opened late summer. Thanks for inquiry!”

Windmill Hot Dogs & Burgers!
More South Jersey in Hoboken
According to the Windmill Hot Dogs website, expect Hoboken to have yet another place to entertain your non-vegetarian cravings!
As you can see - they ambiguously list the location as “Corner of Fifth and Washington…”
Which leads me to think…
Is the 7-Eleven not happening?
Back in April - I reported that the old Boston Chicken Market was to become a 7-Eleven. Keep in mind that I overheard this over the police radio (as they had set off a burglar alarm) - and it seemed legitimate. However, it also makes me wonder if the old Soup Man location might also be the future location of Windmill (while not technically on the “corner” - and also rumored to become another “Italian Deli”)…
I emailed WindMill last week - and haven’t received a response yet.
Was the 7-Eleven deal never finalized? Perhaps it fell through?
Either way - Hoboken is becoming a “Ham-bur-ken!”
WindMill is Socially Networked…
One other thing - WindMill stays connected with their customers:
Curiously - an update from MARCH 2nd, 2009 - indicated that “Work had begun” on the Hoboken location… before Boston Market AND Soup Man closed… makes you think.

Day care is the new black
Word on the street is that the 1300 Park Location (formerly Tonic Bar/Lounge) - and previously supposed to be a “Boutique Bistro” - is now slated to become a child day care center. Gotta give the owners credit - you need to cater to what your potential customers want!

6/24/2009 Update:
Sleep Island (533 Washington St.) opened up about a month ago. I decided to swing by and take a look.
(A room full of mattresses can only be so exciting…)
Mattress Shopping gives me a headache
Originally, I visited the store to just get interior photos, and to update the contact info (see that after the jump.) I also found out that Sleep Island is owned by Roman, who also runs Futonland down the street. Great, but…
I made the mistake of simply asking how much one random mattress cost. I think it was the Sealy “Boheme” or something like that. Mattress only (I don’t need a boxspring) - was $344 bucks. “That’s it?” I thought - considering I paid maybe $1200 for my last one 3 or 4 years ago (some memory foam + coil spring combo - which I originally thought was the best ever - but didn’t last.. it’s wearing out already). The sales guy working there kept repeating how much cheaper they are than “Sleepy’s” - so I’m thinking “Boy mattress prices must have come down - or I got ripped off last time…”
This set off many hours of wasted time online researching the myriad of models of mattresses available - and I quickly realized that mattresses still cost an arm and a leg - if you want a decent one. They all feel fine in the store - but you have no way of knowing how reliable they really are. A really crappy industry, if you ask me. Some kind of “sleep cartel” must be running the show - Smoke and mirrors.
Hoboken’s “Furey” had written a blog entry about some mom & pop shop called “Omaha Bedding Company” - and I emailed him in the wee hours today to see if he still likes it 18 months later… he responded back saying his whole family has them (but didn’t mention anything about longevity). He paid about $1500 bucks for it, and insisted that you sleep on one at a Ritz-Carlton hotel first before you buy. See what I mean by complicated?
Getting restful sleep with no back or body pain as a result is paramount in life - So I don’t want to make the same mistake again…
Do you have a mattress brand/model that you swear by? That will last 10+ years? What is the best value?
Despite this rant - see the Sleep Island contact info after the jump…

What happened?
Just a few weeks ago - Ameritel T-Mobile (732 Washington St.) had a karaoke giveaway promotion at their store - and now it’s for rent!
I recall them talking about moving to a better Hoboken location - but couldn’t find it yesterday, and they didn’t return my emails or phone calls. Anyone see this pop up somewhere else?

Healthy Teeth at Maxwell Place
Well respected dentist Frank DePaola, who currently has an office at 1209 Hudson Street, is opening an “Exclusive” second location at Maxwell Place! A whopping block away from his current place!

6/18/2009 Update:
This spot is doomed!
I’m telling you - I’m keeping this picture below on hand as the permanent stock photo for this location. The FOURTH business in less than three years to close up shop on the southwest corner of 14th and Bloomfield is Good Breed. About six months in, and brown paper on the windows again.
What business would succeed at this teeny-tiny spot?
