Where do you park in Hoboken?

Hoboken Street parking vs. Garage parking – which is better?

Face it, having a car in Hoboken is very difficult. If it’s not the horrific roads or flood conditions, it’s the entitled pedestrians you need to watch out for, or drunk drivers smashing into you. But the most painful thing is parking on the street.

But where do YOU park in Hoboken?

Garage Parking is a no-brainer in Hoboken

Not just that it’s hard enough to find parking (hey council “reformers” what happened to those 700 spots you “freed up” because of corner cars?) – but once you DO find a spot, the city finds some way to boot you, ticket you and tow you. A racket for sure.

But with all that difficulty, you’d think that a majority of drivers would seek out alternatives – like parking in a friggin’ Hoboken Parking Garage. At most, these spots cost around $300/month – and not only do they eliminate the “merry go round” of trying to find a spot at rush hour, they also keep your car safe and dry. The comfort of not having to worry about street sweepers or parking enforcement maniacs is priceless.

So why doesn’t everyone try to get a spot in a garage? Is that monthly cost SUCH a burden that people can’t make ends meet? If so – wow, perhaps people should look into either living elsewhere or getting better jobs.

Why don't you park in a garage?

It’s awesome when you park on the street, and then your car is towed to North Bergen because of a water main break. Speaking to a cop on the scene tells me I don’t have to go to the police station and get a release, but he can’t help me get anywhere.

Ok – so I’ve been at the Midtown Garage for almost a year. I submitted my renewal info, passed “technical review” but now I find I’ve been wait listed. WAIT LISTED! On a renewal!

Anyone know how that works? Is this wait list thing just a formality? Or do I need to have a plan B for the end of February?

TIA

I have a garage. I made the mistake of parking my car on the street in front of my apartment for a few hours and it was stolen. Moral of the story: if you care about your car, don’t park it on the street in Hoboken.

Based on downtown signage, garage parking is intended to be a well-kept secret.

After 20 years of looking for parking spaces on the street and having to move for the sweeper and getting ticketed and towed anyway, I took out a space in Garage D. It’s $180 a month and it’s the best investment if you have a car in Hoboken. $6 a day to not have to deal with any of that. if I want to go out of town on a Friday night I can do so now and know I have a space when I get back. I don’t have idiots vandalizing my car and leaving crap on the windshield. I don’t get those phone calls from the city saying I have to move my car because there’s construction going on. The other upside is I find I walk more because the car is 8 blocks from my home, so I have to think twice about going to get it. Win-win.
