Hoboken Movie Lineup: 10/11/2013

Bow Tie Cinemas Hoboken NJOne of the new movies opening this week is Captain Phillips, a “seaborne hostage saga” starring Tom Hanks, which is a “True story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.”

I watched the trailer – and it looks fairly “gut wrenching.” Plus, I think Hanks is one of the best actors (Castaway was a classic that you can watch multiple times).

Good reviews for the most part, like: “No other film I have seen this year has the sort of visceral gut-wrenching terror and deep, complex humanity that Captain Phillips presents. The action flows thick and fast, but so much of what drives the film happens beneath the surface.”

However, some astute reviewers said this movie pales in comparison to A Hijacking – Which releases on DVD & Blu-ray this coming Tuesday. “Compare Hollywood’s effort to Denmark’s recent A Hijacking, rich with corporate guilt and off-board tensions, and the shortcomings are clear.”

Hmmm. Might make me think twice about seeing the shoddier “Hollywood botch job.”

And don’t forget to check out what this week’s “movie classics” are as well. This week we have the original Friday the 13th as well as Psycho.
