Reader Mail: Obnoxious Car Alarms

12/11/2007:

Hoboken411 reader Eric expresses his discontent towards car alarms and irresponsible owners. I have to say I rarely hear it, since I live in a well-constructed 1800’s brownstone. But what about newly constructed homes? What are your feelings about these disturbances?

hoboken-horrible-car-alarms.gif“Hi there-

I’m a VERY long time reader -I love the Web site as it helps keeps abreast of a wide variety of developments/happenings in town. Keep up that great job!

That said, an ever-growing issue that warrants ‘ink’ is car alarms going off during the wee hours of night. Indeed, I never understood how car alarms offer any sort of theft deterrent as everyone has one -and when they do go off they are simply ignored. However, it’s not so easy to ignore when they go off three nights in a row at 3:00 AM for a substantial amount of time (I live at Second and Park). Sure, we live in a very compact city where garbage cans get thrown around at night and/or an occasional drunk bumps into a car. But people, if you INSIST on having a car alarm please do us ALL a favor and adjust its sensitivity.

Thanks!

Eric”

This piss ant’s alarm is going off right now. I think I counted 6 times in a row. Not only are you parked outside my window you’re parked illegally.

If you don’t turn this thing off or fix you’re damn sensitivity, there will be no other warnings granted.

So annoying. It’s a green subaru.

I have the passive alarm and love it: I have to type in a code or the car won’t start. No noise. The noise would be useless to me anyway, judging by how often I get a spot within earshot of where I live. I had the alarm put in up on JFK Blvd in JCH; I think the place was called Central Alarm or maybe Central Auto. The owner said almost everyone prefers the noisy alarm for some reason.

The alarms were worse 10-15 years ago, no doubt. And I also find the police much more responsive to noise and other complaints now than I did in the 80s.

I have called the police several times. If the owner lives in Hoboken the police can call and wake up thier sorry ass to come around and turn it off at 3am. If they don’t live here, I’ve seen them tow the car. Ahhhhhh quiet.
