Hoboken Christmas Tree Lighting

12/9/2008 Bump:
Since I don’t feel like schlepping to City Hall for the annual Christmas Tree lighting, I figured I’d bump the post/video from last year.
Ahh, the memories.
12/11/2007:
Since most of you didn’t get to experience what this year’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony was like, here’s a video compilation filmed last night. A smidge over 200 resident watched the show. For fun, I overlayed a Joe Pesci Christmas soundtrack on the clip. Hoboken has some very talented kids these days. They can sing, dance, cheer, and play instruments quite well. It was quite enjoyable!
Great job this year!
12/10/2007:
Tonight at 6pm. Hopefully they have UL listed lights.
12/6/2007:
Hey kids! Come down to City Hall this Monday at 6pm for the annual Christmas tree lighting! Santa himself will be there, along with cheerleaders, festive holiday songs, and the high school band. Plus, with great local bars nearby, you can have a nice winter ale to warm your soul afterward.
Hopefully no one cuts this event from the budget!
Hmm, with Santa in the picture, and an elf performing, why couldn’t they just call it a “Christmas Tree Lighting”?

I agree. I’ll come to a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, but screw the city council if they won’t call it a Christmas tree. What is next? Do we change the name of a menorah so us gentiles don’t get offended???
Maybe Mayor Dave and the loud-mouths who threw a fit at the last council meeting should open their eyes and see the people who pay their salaries.
As an aside, since I’m ranting, doesn’t the evil Terry know that deciding to take no action is in fact an action? Maybe we could put a giant Christmas tree over the rail yards instead of unnecessary apartments.
just a thoughtful rant….

“evil Terry”, eh? Interesting. She’s short, speaks in a croaky tone and although I’ve never seen her finger light up she does occasionally have a weird orange glow that emanates from her insta-tan. How about we condense that ‘evil Terry’ into the much more user friendly and I’d argue, appropriate, “ET”?

Watching the Mayor dance last night to Christmas carols made my eyes bleed.

Did it make the Baby Jesus Cry too? Or would people have been too offended by that?

The last I saw, the entire manger was cornering the sidewalk onto Newark making a run for it. Nobody should have to witness that. No one. It was as bad the Bush.

Does this clown (literally and figuratively) Polka Dot get health benefits from the city? How much do we pay this guy to show up to just about every event the city puts on?
Something tells me there is a huge line item for this guy in the mysterious Cultural Affairs Trust Fund the council has been talking about during the budget hearings.
I say we put out an RFQ for Clown Services before Polka Dot gets one more taxpayer dollar.

Question: did anyone have troubles seeing the video? I couldn’t, so I temporarily replaced it with a lesser-quality Google vid. Please let me know.

Isn’t the Cultural Affairs Trust Fund made up from money they collect from vendors and sponsors NOT tax payer money?
If you can fit into that costume and do that great high kick…I am sure they will interview you for the job
Fun event. The kids were very great!

I tried to get a look at the tree on my way home from the PATH last night but couldn’t see it behind the fire truck. Exactly how small is this “Holiday tree”? I don’t expect it to be the size of the one in Rockefeller but the one in my home town puts this one to shame. Maybe this is the difference between a Christmas tree and a holiday one.

The video asks: Is Santa a cop? The word I heard is that it is Bill Bregin in the Santa suit.
The Joe Pesci sountrack is hilarious! You had me for a moment there, I thought it was Polka Dot singing!

Ugh. I’m not sure if I wanna go– long day and it is still not over. I was excited about this, yesterday. And now I’m just…
If only latkes and doughnuts were served at the tree lighting ceremony. Guess I’ll have to wait until the 21st for that stuff: chabadhoboken.com/templates/article...h/Grand-Public-Menorah-Lighting.htm

Anyone else catch the Colbert Report last night? Colbert showed the show’s Christmas tree and said he stole it from Hoboken City Hall.
