How would you rate the Hoboken skyline?

rate the Hoboken SkylineMany, if not most waterfront cities in the world can be characterized by their signature “skyline.” Where it’s the Space Needle in Seattle, the Empire State Building in NYC, or even the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco – cities have a noticeable landmark of some kind.

Was perusing my photo collection the other day – and looked at this photo below. The majority of Hoboken is peppered with run-of-the-mill cookie-cutter condos. With over a 1.5 linear miles of visible waterfront, you’d think you’d want that space to shine, no?

Well – we do have at least one “signature” thankfully enough – the Lackwanna Terminal tower – which was built over 100 years ago, and renovated under the David Roberts administration.

But other than that – the rest of the city almost blends together like a blob.

The skyline is just the town and its people – homogenous, uninteresting and lacking character.

Our skyline is dominated by bland boxes that look like they could have been designed and built by a 6 year old with Legos. Apparently Toll Brothers et al on the waterfront think that “architectural design” consists of a block with two different color bricks. I guess I am spoiled having lived in Chicago for 5 years, where every building goes through more scrutiny to assure it has some architectural merit.

The skyline may be bland, but if you come up closer, we do have a fine collection of flat screen tv’s on the same walls in each unit! Isn’t that community unity?
