Hoboken woman assaulted
Alert: Hoboken woman assaulted on Clinton Street
Below is a scary story a local Hoboken woman wants to share with the community. If anyone was on Clinton Street this past Thursday night / early Friday morning (June 27, 28) at around 12:15am to 12:30am, please call Hoboken Police at (201)420-2100.
Thursday night attack on Clinton Street
“I contemplated writing this email over the weekend but after speaking with friends of the Hoboken community, I felt like it was important to share my experience due to the nature that it could happen to any other female in our community and I’d like to prevent it from happening to someone else. I also want to make the community aware that even though these things don’t happen too often, they happen.
This past Thursday Night June 27th around 12:15am I was attacked outside on Clinton Street between 13th & 14th Streets. After having a great dinner at City Bistro and then meeting with friends at 10th and Willow, I proceeded to walk home around 11:45 by myself. Like normal, I always walk up Willow Ave since its very well lit and cross through the Rite Aid parking lot which is also well lit. I then proceeded to walk down Clinton by where the construction trailers are lined up at the dead end (which tends to be a little dark, however there is a light right outside the door and people do it all the time).”
Attacked out of nowhere
“This is where a guy proceeded (out of nowhere) to come up from behind me at the last minute, grab me for a few seconds as if I “knew him,” tried to push me up against the building and then pushed me into a hidden area of dirt behind some bushes. He then wrestled me to the ground for a few minutes and tried to get up my dress. Luckily, with the amount of kicking and screaming I was doing, and after failing his attempt, he must of either got spooked, saw someone coming, or just woke up out of whatever trance he was in.
He got up and took off leaving me in the dirt searching through my purse for my phone terrified and sobbing.
When I got up a few seconds later, there was a cab driver making a U-turn (probably dropping someone off) and saw me flailing my arms and dirty. Thankfully, he drove me to the Sunoco gas station across from the Rite Aid where the cops were able to meet me a few seconds later. I will compliment the Hoboken PD for showing up within minutes of my phone call and thank the local cabby who picked me up and didn’t even think twice to try and drive me somewhere safe while constantly telling me “you’re okay now, your safe” to calm me down.
Now, I’m currently working with the Hoboken PD, and reaching out to Rite Aid, and local management companies in the area that have cameras to see if we can get a better look at the creep who did this.
From what I remember, since it was dark and my hands were in front of my face pushing him away, he was white (however it was dark so he could of been light skinned Hispanic), muscular, wearing dark jeans and I’m almost positive a button down shirt. Hopefully, the video tapes that were surrounding the area should help.”
Better safe than sorry in Hoboken
“So what was learned after this incident, there will be no more shortcuts or walking home solo after dark. All the women in Hoboken know that its not smart to do it, but honestly everyone does it because they don’t think it can happen to them, “it’s only a few blocks” or that Hoboken is so busy at night that they don’t have to worry about it. Truthfully this happens all the time, we just don’t hear about it as much because less then 1% of girls attacked report it.
But moving forward, I’d just like to tell the women of Hoboken to be more cautious at night, PAY the $6 even if it’s only a few blocks away, and if you have a gut instinct you shouldn’t be walking somewhere, listen to your gut and go the other way, because even though what happened to me is horrible, it could have been so much worse.”Hoboken NJ
