Fire up the hill yesterday
While I was taking a much deserved break from computers and police scanners, there was a pretty hefty fire up the hill in Union City that several readers had mentioned to me.
“We could see the smoke from this fire in Union City last night from our living room in midtown Hoboken. Know its not Hoboken, but very close by. We tuned into the police and fire scanner from your site and heard the exchange that the fire took place near 11th and Summit Ave. My first thought was arson, like so many suspicious Hoboken fires. Interesting to read other comments on the web, clearly some folks were thinking along the same lines, “there goes the neighborhood, here comes more luxury condos”.
From Eyewitness News:
Cold temperatures made a five-alarm fire overnight in New Jersey challenging for firefighters.
The fire gutted two homes in Union City. It started last night on 11th Street. Firefighters had to deal with frigid temperatures while battling the intense flames.
No word yet on whether anybody was injured or killed. And faulty wiring is said to be to blame in a fire that destroyed a White Plains apartment building. The fire broke out late Friday night on West Point Road.
Fire officials say the blaze was accidental. Too much voltage was going into the heating unit.
Twenty-six people were displaced by the fire. Eight people were hospitalized.”
