Baby Gap

Baby Gap – 222 Washington St. – Hoboken, NJ

Hoboken Baby Gap coming soon washington streetConfirmed this week that a Baby Gap location is under construction at 222 Washington Street, right next door to cosmetic store Ricky’s NYC.

While the storefront may not seem all that from the outside, this Baby Gap location will be fairly large – at close to 5,000 square feet of retail shopping space inside.

According to a project manager I spoke with yesterday, they want to be finished at the end of April, or early May – but he understood how jobs like this work, as well as the Hoboken Construction Office. He said more likely the store will be ready to open mid to late May.

Do you think a Baby Gap in town will hurt other boutiques that sell kids clothing? I guess we don’t have too many of those anyway, since Ciao Belly closed up last year.

Anyway – people have been commenting to me more and more, that Hoboken is turning into an “outdoor shopping mall,” with all these chains popping up.

I will not shop at a store that gambles with people’s lives. By refusing to sign the Bangladesh Fire and Building Safety Agreement, Gap is displaying a disgusting level of greed. Stop putting lives at risk and sign now. http://bit.ly/10GoOeh

I was just in Westfield last night and noticed they had a good mix of “chain” stores vs boutiques so I definitely think it’s possible to have both. I find it funny that people think Hoboken is turning into an outdoor mall… take a trip down to Arlington which is the Hoboken of Washington DC. That’s an outdoor mall. But then again, for every shopping area built or new condo building developed, they are required to include a certain number of spots for general parking so they don’t have any of the parking issues we do.

Unfortunately, this is what the market dictates. Hoboken has gotten so popular that rent on Washington Street is sky high. Boutiques won’t be able to afford to rent and if they’re not on Washington, they won’t do nearly the same business. It’s a side effect of our awesome towns popularity.

I do think baby gap will do very well as we have many young families in town. [quote comment=”219665″]Unfortunately, this is what the market dictates. :( What a nightmare. This will bring regular Gap, Banana, Express in no time. I love my Hoboken Boutiques and would be devastated if this put them out of business.
