Maybe the Hoboken Historical Museum should do an exhibit on the fires and how many people died in them.
The fires were part of the 2nd part of the 150th Anniversary exhibit. Many of the newspaper articles are easily accessed if you go in and ask.

This is a very ugly part of Hoboken history. And the crimes remain unresolved.

Well said. Vote Zimmer if you can. Call 917-968-1508 or e-mail Westsider07030@aol.com if you want to help.

I agree with you and that is why we need to elect people to local office who will be watching out for the people and not be seduced by residential developer money. I believe it is still called "public service".

And it should be noted that the majority of the victims of the fires were Hispanic and South Asian (Indian). That is why it really gets me when they continue to support the very people who stood by while they sufferred, because it is the evil they know.
Something to remember those who died, those who were particularly traumatized, their families, the firemen and the other emergency service personnel; and thought provoking for the rest of us.

And, there is not even so much as a historical marker at any of these sites.

These fires were widely believed to be arson.
****************
Thanks Nick, for the correction. It seemed endless, the firemen carring the body bags down the ladder.
There was another on 14th st. around that time, too. The victims were trapped on the roof without a fire escape.
Bad times.
It blows my mind how oblivious people can be to the world.
Not sure if that was directed at me, but like I said I avoid that intersection and do not commute by PATH. I would not call a traffic light at Newark and Hudson "the world". Get real.
developers arent' evil, benevolent or anything else....they are in business. The business of making and selling condos. They don't care who buys the units as long as they get bought. If some of the local officals are willing to sell out their own town and their own people to make it easy for the developers to keep building, why should the developers care? Why should the people gettings squeezed complain? The developers aren't screwing you....your "friends" are.
The fire on October 24th, 1981 at 1202 12th street killed ELEVEN people, 7 of whom were children.

On Jan. 29, 1979, TWENTY-ONE people died in a fire at 131 Clinton street.

I believe both buildings are now condos.

At least another NINE people also died in other fires in Hoboken between 1978 and 1981.

These fires were widely believed to be arson.

All the fires were horrific, but the fire on 12th was particularly appalling. I'm not sure of the numbers, but I think it was 11 children, and 1 adult, someone please correct me, who died that early morning when the stairwell was deliberately set fire. I live a block away. My mother happened to be visiting with me. What a day. We watched them take the black bags with the small bodies inside down the ladder. I choke just thinking about that day, all the horrible days of fire.
Big developers, didn't set those fires. The fires were set by individual greed.
