PATH still causing woes

Letter: After Sandy, PATH caters to NYC and not New Jersey

The PATH system isn’t just for those who travel to New York City. One Hoboken411 gripes about the lack of westbound service during the week.

Do you also share their frustrations?

“I know I’m probably one of the many commuters in Hoboken who is still feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Recently, the PATH was refunding people who had active passes during the Hurricane, so I reached out and was told that my pass was not “active” according to their system. I’ve sent multiple screen shots to SmartLink stressing concerns, and the feedback that I received was negative.

The PATH is still not running to the WTC which means getting to Newark has been more of a hassle. First they told us to walk to Newport which adds onto our commute, than they offered the LightRail to be free for the weeks in December when everyone is on vacation, now they are telling us to take the PATH to Christopher Street and than come back into Jersey to go to Hoboken or Newark.

They are showing no remorse for any of us, they were all too worried about how people who live in Hoboken will get to NY, never worried about people who live in Hoboken and work in Jersey.”

Actually if you had kept up with all of the advisories you would see it is still be cross-honored. The only time it is not is when the WTC path is down on the weekends.

And in case you are questioning whether I am correct, a quick look at the FAQ on the panynj.gov site shows this:

    6. Does NJ TRANSIT’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail continue to cross-honor PATH tickets?
NJ TRANSIT’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail continues to cross-honor PATH tickets at Hoboken and Exchange Place until PATH’s direct Hoboken to World Trade Center service is restored.

It has been a pain, to say the least, getting to and from Newark. The PATH doesnt seem to have a set schedule and there are constant delays, mostly due to an aging infrastructure. The Port Authority will probably use this as justification to raise fares and then spend the money at the WTC site. I’ve been walking to and from Newport everyday since it’s faster then waiting for the Light Rail but this week has been a bit nippier than usual. 😉

I think that the PATH is not necessarily catering to New York City and not New Jersey but rather living up to their primary purpose (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) and that would be in providing service across the Hudson – both into NYC from NJ and back into NJ from NYC. I do not believe the primary mission of the PATH is to provide NJ to NJ transit.

The PATH cater to NYC and then you state the PATH still does not go to WTC…is that not contradicting yourself.

Everyone who use the WTC line is suffering, both in NY and NJ..It sucks but I believe they will get this done as soon as possible, they lose money every day that commuters use alternate transportation while these lines are down.
