Annual Hoboken House Tour – 2007

October
10/27/2007:
Reminder- Hoboken House Tour tomorrow!
10/23/2007:
Again we have the annual fundraiser for the Hoboken Historical Museum that let’s you get a glimpse of some of Hoboken’s finer residences.
See last years Hoboken House Tour recap here. While we enjoyed it, and support the Museum, we wished that there were less developer “sales pitches”, and more homes to visit. This year there are only nine.
From the Museum:
“The Hoboken Historical Museum’s House Tour is your ticket to enter some of the most distinctive homes in Hoboken.
This year’s tour offers a peek inside nine homes, from recently remodeled older homes to a showplace for an art-collecting family to a condo in one of the newest buildings on the waterfront. Several homes were decorated by noted interior designers, including Lucretia Moroni, whose handpainted fabrics, wall treatments and floor coverings can be seen at www.fatto-a-mano.com.
The 2007 Hoboken House Tour takes place Sunday October 28th, rain or shine.
Advance purchase ticket vouchers are now available for the 2007 tour.
You can buy them at the Museum, or:
- Sparrow Wine & Liquors, 126 Washington St. and 1224 Shipyard Lane (checks only)
- Amanda’s, 908 Washington St.
- Fleet Feet Sports, 604 Washington St.
- Battaglia’s Housewares and Gifts, 319 Washington St.

I went on one of these tours a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. You’d never believe some of the homes people have in this town! They are absolutely gorgeous, and all so different from each other.
I did get severely annoyed, however, as one of the spaces on the tour wasn’t even a furnished apartment, it was some guy trying to sell a unit he had renovated. I hope that the homes available for viewing this year aren’t in it for that purpose.
Anyone know if the homes for viewing are brand new this year, or repeats from before?

And to answer rapperd’s question, you can check out the homes during those hours. You’re basically given a map of the homes available for viewing, and some kind of ticket or something (I can’t remember exactly what) when you buy your ticket that you have to show at the front door of each home.
9 may not sound like a lot, but it will take a couple of hours at least, given that you are walking all around town, and not always in a straight line.

I spoke to a representative from the museum at the Arts Fair and she advised that they do not repeat, at most they’ll repeat every other year. However, she also advised that it isn’t so easy to get people to open up their homes for the tour (this in response to my advising that I was disappointed with some of the properties from the previous year). I’d guess they’ll repeat if they don’t get enough homes signed up.

The reason there are usually 8 – 10 homes each year is that’s about the most an average tourgoer can reasonably visit in a two to two-and-a-half hour tour, on foot. The Museum tries to solicit a mix of traditional and modern homes, and deliberately seeks out residents of newer buildings to join the tour because so many people are curious about these new places. Once in a while, the Museum will settle for a model unit, just for the curiosity factor. But the goal is to include a variety of different lived-in homes. If you have any suggestions for next year, please give the Museum a call at 201-656-2240.

It’s been on the tour. Some rooms are very nice and the view is beautiful. Some rooms have Ikea-type furniture.

The corp sponsored units provide some of Hoboken’s best celebrity spotting opportunities. I shared an elevator ride with Gov. Corzine and his lady friend (and no it wasn’t Carla Katz!) on my way to see Toll Brother’s corporate pad in the Tea Building last year. Very nice pad and I left some choice comments in the unit’s guest book.

I have friends that come in from the suburbs just for this. They love to see what some money and good contractors can get you.

“Every year you see something different. Where else can you get a glimpse into people’s homes like this in Hoboken! I love seeing how people have decorated, their layout design, and use of space. It gives me so many great ideas. And, it’s fun. I highly recommend going.”
