Charlie the Missing Cat

10/18/2007 Meow!:
Melissa, a distraught cat owner is wondering if you’ve seen “Charlie”.
She lives up on Ogden Ave. in Jersey City Heights (many call that “Hoboken Heights” due to the close proximity to town, plus the Light Rail elevator on 9th st.)
Anyway, she says:
“I lost my cat on Ogden Ave in Jersey City and I was wondering if you could put his picture on your website. I am so devastated because my roommate left the door open and he is gone! Please help. The cat was lost on ogden ave between bowers and south street, which is around 5th street in Hoboken. I walked for 2 hours with posters in Jersey City and I met 3 people who said they saw the cat on Bowers between New York Ave and Webster.
One thing about the cat that stands out is his eyes. He has amazingly beautiful blue/gray eyes. They are gorgeous. His medium size, neutered, very friendly but very very scared. He will look sad. His eyes are very expressive. Hloves tuna fish! If anyone sees him, tell them to please call me at 201 220 7396.”
Thanks so much!
Melissa

Here’s some HELPFUL advise:
Chances are Charlie’s still in the area and hasn’t ventured all the way into Hoboken. I wouldn’t spend you time looking for a local stry. Charlie is scared and wants to come home but doesn’t know where home is. Speaking from someone who has been through this before and sucessfully (with time) was able to return their cat safey home – here is some advise.
Put out blankets, sheets etc. that your cat has slept in on your front/back lawn a box turned sideways. You will leave his scent and yours for the cat to find. If you’re lucky (at night) Charlie will sleep in the box and you can try and get him that way.
Spend most of your time looking for Charlie at night, sit outside with your tuna fish on the front steps and ring a cat toy (bell) etc. or make the calls you would inside the house. He may not come up to even you because he’ll be scared so this may take several tries.
You can search during the day but look under cars and in scrubs — he will probably hid and won’t be in plain site — he’s scared.
We ended up using a humane trap and caught our guy in one night after a few nights of unsucccessfully trying to approach him or pick him up. You can pick one up in a hardware store but you will be be aware that you may trap other small animals or cats which you will have to carefully and safely remove from the trap.
There are probably other tips on the internet. I would also contact area vets and shelters in case someone calls or brings in your cat — you want them to have your info on file.
Hope this helps. And definitely enlist the help of your roommate they owe you. Plan to be up late at night.

Midnight, I believe the cat you speak about is now in custody at Cornerstone Pets. He has been to the vet and besides some battle scars, some missing teeth he has unfortuanately contracted FIV, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, or Feline Aids. As many as 24% of cats have FIV, and it is more common in male street cats and Ralphie fits right into that category. No threat to people at all and Ralphie can live a long healthy life but will need to be placed with another cat with FIV or be in a single cat household. FIV, is much like AIDS in people, it is a virus that weekens the immunce system and a cat, like a person, normally sucumbs to a disease it cannot fight off.

Sorry, that’s 14% of cats with FIV.
