Dog Walking Packs
How many dogs in a car are OK in Hoboken?
Hoboken411 reader (and new resident) Louise spotted that “pack” dog walker in town the other day. Here is what she had to say:
“The owner is a dog walker in town and keep about 10 dogs in her car for anytime from 30 minutes or more in the car while picking up other dogs. This looks so uncomfortable as well as unsafe for all these dogs.
This dog walker charges all these people with dogs to walk them and they do eventually end up at the dog park but not until they drive around picking all of them up. I dread what will happen over the summer! She has all sizes, kinds of dogs barking and stuffed into her car – I wonder if the owners know that this is how their pups are spending their afternoons, with minimum time actually getting
any exercise or fresh air. I think this is terrible. I just moved to Hoboken and have loved everything about it until I saw this and learned that she does it daily.”
411 Note: I did see this personally myself last week – and all the dogs in the SUV were barking quite incessantly, and the walker was telling them (calmly from what I saw), to “stop barking.” Not sure if they were excited or scared. But you don’t see employees of a dog kennel telling all the canines to “stop barking” there, I feel that it’s just natural dog behavior to express themselves in certain situations – good or bad.
411 Tech Note: And for all future video submissions: Videos taken “portrait” or vertically just stink. Take them sideways, horizontally (or “landscape”). It’s not that hard.
Complaint against dog walking packs in Hoboken
2/27/2013 Update:
Back in December – we published a brief article about dog walkers in Hoboken. Specifically dog walking packs – and the walkers that really push the upper limit in terms of how many pooches should be walked at a time, by a single individual.
This particular situation seems to still be on the hot plate here in Hoboken.
Dog walker police report filed in Hoboken, NJ
Well, someone had enough – and filed a police report about one said dog walker in Hoboken. Took place near the Shipyard area (and that new carpeted Hoboken dog run).
Hoboken Police Officer Elias Colon’s report stated:
“I was dispatched to the area of 10th & Sinatra on an animal complaint. Upon arrival, I was met by the caller who said that she witnessed a female dog walker mistreat one of the 14 dogs she was walking by choking and placing the dog on the ground violently.
I then spoke to the dog walker who said that she did not mistreat the dog, but corrected the problem the dog had with the pack. She said that she had to maintain control of the dog by submitting him to his back, and that it’s a method used to establish dominance in the pack, and control.
The caller did not want to file a formal complaint, but wanted a report on record…” (Note report was simplified for brevity).
I can think of at least one question that I would have as an ordinary observer:
The walker mentioned “in order to establish dominance in the pack.” Would that forceful discipline have been necessary if there weren’t so many dogs? Maybe there wouldn’t be so many out of control dogs if the pack was smaller.
Anyway – this walker apparently hangs out in other areas in town from what I heard.
How many dogs does your dog walker take at once?
Dog walking packs in Hoboken – how much is too much?
12/17/2012:
Since dogs are “pack animals,” I’ve always been okay with Hoboken dog walkers in town that take multiple pooches with them. Either on walks or even to the dog run – where sometimes dozens of dogs inter-mingle with one another.
Some dog owners in town are quite against this – and yearn for their dogs to have “long, single walks” alone and away from other mutts. While I think it’s a bit anti-social, and detrimental to the dogs well-being and psychological development – to each their own, especially if the dog doesn’t get along with others, for instance.
But are some dog walkers pushing the limit of “pack walking?”
One Hoboken411 reader told me they get a little uneasy when some walkers seemingly go overboard with the number of dogs the manage at any single point. Sometimes taking 15 or even close to 20 dogs at the same time! Can they handle so many? Should they? How about the frenzy created when you let a dozen or two NEW dogs loose at the run simultaneously? “When I see someone coming with that many dogs – I get the hell out of the run,” they said.
How do you feel about over-doing the dog walks? Are they doing it because it’s a good thing? Or because they need the money?

well of course it’s too much. I see this all the time coming home from work. Irresponsible owners! Your dog doesn’t need to be with 20 dogs to be socialized. Take a walk on Washington Street with your dog for gods sake if that is what you’re worried about.

Wouldn’t care as long as no dogs are hurt or lost. The more the merrier!

Am with Brad. The dog run is to be shared anyway. It’s not meant to be exactly the way a dog owner or walker wants it when he/she wants it.
One more thing: I’ve become aware of nasty rumors going around about people who do their jobs with pets. Some are coming from competitors. I am already calling these people out on it, so potential clients will know who these vicious a-holes are.

Make sure that ‘what’s in it for you’ for badmouthing others for no reason is worth your while.

very smart, brad… lets wait till the woman in the CRV (I’ll bet that’s her in the photo) driving around 15 dogs , gets into a motor vehicle accident and ends up getting a few dogs killed. THEN, lets do something about it. AGAIN, I’m sure there are honest and professional dog walkers out there, but lets face facts, it’s not rocket science and a good number of the DW’s are ill prepared, and some are downright scam artist. A lot of these people do it because it’s easy money and they do make LOTS of money PREYING on rich professionals WHO SHOULDN’T HAVE A DOG TO BEGIN WITH. I propose the city set a LIMIT (4) as to how many dogs a dog walker can safely walk at one time, what’s that, they won’t be able to make any money? then get a fucking job at McDonalds assholes.

I don’t care how many dogs they walk, as long as people with dogs stop throwing their dog poop in recycling cans. That’s an insult to the recycling people at the sorting facility that have to sort through actual crap because of self-entitled dog walkers.

On the subject of dog runs – there needs to be a limit on how many dogs a single person can bring into each park (perhaps 2 dogs per person?). There is a guy who routinely brings 5 miniature pinschers to the Sinatra dog park. Forget the fact that they are small – the 5 of them together are mean, have a pack mentality, and I have seen them gang up and attack other dogs in the park on multiple occasions. He is unable to keep control of them because there are so many of them. No one individual should be allowed to have that many dogs off-leash in the park at one time. At any given time in the park, an owner/walker should always be able to be in control of each dog they have with them, and be able to restrain them in their arms if necessary. I don’t see how that could possibly be more than 2 dogs per 1 person.

Why do you give a shit about recycling cans? Do you personally manage them? aren’t plastic poop bags and dog shit organic to begin with? Maybe you should find some chicks to bang rather than worry about such nonsense.
Seriously, how does what rubbish goes in what bin affect your life specifically? A very curious attitude to have. Are you troubled in other ways? Are you mad because you follow the rules but other people don’t give a shit?

Because I have to bring my recycling can in from the curb every Tuesday and Thursday and by 8am it’s already full of dog shit bags that sit there until the next week stinking up our building. Tell me where you live I can drop off some of them if you enjoy dog shit so much.

Your comments are preposterous. I’m not a “rich professional,” but the woman in the photo above has worked with my small beagle for nearly three years. I guarantee you she’s not “preying” on me. And I doubt she’s raking in much “easy money.” What this hardworking business person does is provide an essential weekday service — at a bargain price — that allows my family to maintain a beloved pet while we’re all at work or school. Yes, she uses the “pack” model, which not only keeps her services affordable, but gives our high-energy pooch a chance to romp and socialize with other mutts for a few hours in a controlled environment. It’s a win-win arrangement for us — and for anybody else lucky enough to be her customer. Competitors and wannabes occasionally snipe at her, but she’s great at what she does — and one of the best deals in Hoboken.

Since the original topic of this thread is “Dog Walking Packs,” I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that if you’re going to start complaining about dog crap, then I’m going to start complaining about strollers and ill-behaved children in restaurants/bars.

As a father of two young girls and a dog owner who throws away sealed poop bags in people’s garbage cans (if there are no municipal ones around), can I now complain about drunks who puke on my sidewalk and toss over potted plants, etc?
Back to the topic at hand, I agree that more than 2 dogs being brought into a dog park is not safe. My dog was attacked (unprovoked) by a dog that was one of the 5-6 dogs that a walker took into Stevens Park one day. He couldn’t control his dogs- I had to thro the dog halfway across the run ad pick mine up to prevent further injury.

There’s a difference between a garbage can and a recycling can. Apparently Hoboken dog owners are just as color blind as their dogs.

Thank you. I, too, have seen this woman around town. It is unfair to post a pic of her in a judgmental fashion without even knowing how hard she works with these dogs. (Bet there is an agenda behind this but I digress.)
She keeps these dogs under control.
I’ve seen owners with just one a-hole out of control dog, and these owners are in denial about the reality that Fluffy needs training…

Moosh – the pic wasn’t unfair, and the post implicated no one in particular. It was necessary to show what “pack dogs” meant. And as you can see from my post, I defended pack walking, but published to start a discussion on whether people felt some dogs were too many (as indicated by the original dog owner that expressed concern).
The photo is nothing other than actual real life.

Customers who employ these individuals handling multiple dogs must certainly be aware of how she cares for these animals or they wouldn’t have hired her. You’re going to have people in this town bitch about anything they dislike, some even for the fact of just bitching. As long as these multiple dog owners are aware of their surrondings (children or people who may fear dogs etc), I don’t see anything wrong with it. And of course, picking up after the pups goes is part of the job.

What happens the day she doesn’t have them under control? I have seen her too, and I have seen her with MORE dogs than she has in that picture. The dumbest thing about her is that she doesn’t just take them on a short little walk too the dog run she walks them down on the pier for awhile before she goes to the run, she can barely move. (In this picture, it looks like she only has 6-7 dogs, which isn’t bad…again, I have seen her with 10 or more). Just because a dog acts like a f*ing dog doesn’t mean the dog is not trained properly, it’s being A DOG. It’s nice to see that you understand that being a dog walker and all.

re @Hoboken411: “Real life”. Yeah, I’m going to disagree since I know who the competitive and bitter jerks in town are. Hope that’s OK.
re @thekook: “… a f*cking dog”? The dogs I’ve seen get out of hand are the spoiled ones. The ones that are adopted or purchased for the sake of offering company or a social boost, and can do no wrong in the eyes of owners. They go off biting other dogs and picking fights for no reason. And the owners are on their cellphones or doing something that takes their attention away from the dogs they’re supposed to be responsible for.
My dog can be a dog, too. If she acts up in the park, I put a stop to it.
And I’m out and about often so you know.
I agree with whine.

I couldn’t agree more with Hobok15. I can’t speak for every dog walker in town, but the woman in this photo is a hard-working, professional dog trainer who takes the best possible care of the dogs in her pack. Having dogs in a pack like this teaches them how to socialize in a safe way, behave appropriately around other dogs and not get too excited. This woman has been working with my dog for a few months now. He was just a pup when we started and she’s molded him into a fantastic dog – and taught me how to do the same. She trains them, gives them much needed exercise when we are at work and is totally in control at all times. These dogs listen to her and love her. And she loves them and really cares for them as an owner would.
As far as limiting the amount of dogs that one can bring into a dog park – every time I’ve visited a dog park, any “problem” dogs were by themselves, not in a pack. So, I don’t think you can blame the pack. It’s more about the individual dog – and the owner’s, or dog walker’s, control over that dog. As long as you actively monitor the behavior of the dog/s in your care, there usually aren’t any problems.
