Reader Mail: Rickety Stevens Stairs

Today, we have a reader who fears for their safety when traversing the staircase leading from Stevens Institute down to Sinatra Drive.

This letter was sent last month (I didn’t have an accompanying picture) and I could have sworn some steps looked newer than usual in the past week. Regardless, here are the concerns they have/had:

“Hello,

I am writing to you because, to be honest, I don’t know who else to write to and hope someone will read this and it will galvanize someone into doing something. Such is the power and respect I have for your efforts on Hoboken411.com.

I am an active individual who runs many parts of this town on a daily basis looking for all kinds of new ways to cross train. One of the things I love to do is run the wooden Stevens Stairs that connect 6th street with frank sinatra drive. I have been doing this for about three years.

In the last three or so weeks I have noticed that the stairs are become very soft, weak and unstable. Also, there seems to be a considerable bend to its very structure. Im not certain if anyone else has identified this, but if this thing were collapse anyone on it would be in for a nasty nasty spill. I urge you to go to the stairs yourself and see if I am just over reacting, though I do not believe that I am.

Hope all is well and thank again for a great site! my girlfriend and I are on this more often than not :)”

homeworld is right about it being a Senior Design project years ago and bikes being able to ride down it. Personally I find the shallow steps a bitch, since I’m too short to take two a time, but the small steps are annoying. Anyhow, they do do quite regular maintenance on the steps. They randomly replace boards and nails, and for a few days each year the staircase is closed for maintenance.
unless the steps are actually the City of Hoboken’s and they dont have notice of a dangerous condition, nor is their conduct reckless, tort claims act nonsense, could be an issue as to who’s land that is, the city seems to maintain the grass along the side of the hill, roberts decided to dig a hole in the earth not far from there
Steven’s has pretty deep pocket and there is a good argument for actual notice and caused/created.
