Reader Mail: Thank you, HPA!

File this in the “I’m serious, the planets must be aligned” category.

Hoboken411 reader Richard received a very nice courtesy call from a woman at the Hoboken Parking Authority.

“I, like many other people, have been towed more than a few times in Hoboken over the past 5 years. Regardless of how I feel about my experiences with the Hoboken Parking Authority, the Police Department and local tow companies, I was quite impressed with the Hoboken Parking Authority after receiving a call from them this morning.

After getting to work in the city around 8 am, a woman from the HPA called to let me know that no parking signs for September 20 were posted around the corner of 7th and Grand Street, and that my car would be towed this morning. I have never received a call from them before about my car – I would have expected to go to my car on Friday to move it for street cleaning, only to see that it wasn’t there, which has happened in the past (not in that location). The HPA had given me enough notice to leave my office and move my car before the car was towed, saving me all of the fees and aggravation that goes along with trying to get my car back.

So, I’d just like to say thank you very much again to the women who called from the HPA. I don’t know if they call other people before being towed, or if they’ve been doing it for a while, but I really appreciate the extra effort that was taken this morning.”

This happened to me about 2 years ago. I was walking up 6th ave in the city heading to work from the 14th street PATH station and got the call. The woman told me I only had 15 minutes and that the tow truck was already there so when I got back to Hoboken I did a full sprint to 5th and park.

The towing company pockets all the money for a tow, whereas the boots are pure profit for the city. That might help explain their generosity . . .

I have gotten this call also. I told them I could not get back to Jersey and when I got home that night my car was still there. 😀

I was also fortunate enough to have a police officer come to my door one early morning asking me to move before being towed.

When I do construction and get these no parking signs both the parking authority and the police most times make an effort to call people.

what I try to do is get the signs an hour or two before I need just in case something like this happens the people have a chance to get out of the way.
