Stellar Greek Food at Santorini Taverna in Fort Lee, NJ
As I have often found, being spontaneous can lead to the best surprises.
Several weeks ago while trying to find a parking spot for my Hoboken photo project on the George Washington Bridge, we spotted an interesting-looking Greek restaurant called the Santorini Taverna and decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a stupendous decision, because this was the greatest Greek food we’d had in a long time, if not ever! It will certainly make you think twice when considering eating Greek in Hoboken going forward…
Many Hoboken411 readers are well aware that I almost always stay away from carbs, but the thinly-sliced bread toasted with butter, garlic and spices was totally worth the small sacrifice, as were the incredible stuffed grape leaves. Both were incredible! Otherwise, we shared an impossibly fresh Greek salad and a fantastic Pork Souvlaki salad, and Tzatziki (with added paprika for spice). The service was fast and very helpful, though it was a off-hour so it’s hard to say what a busy Friday would be like. We also made a second visit last weekend (photos below), and had no problem finding a seat we were satisfied with – and enjoyed the food just as much!
This place will be especially nice in the upcoming months if you are able to get one of their outside tables – there are two on the front porch, and several tables in back. Otherwise the indoor seating seemed nice as well, at a table or at the long marble bar. While inside, I read that Santorini is a volcanic Greek island, and also learned that the restaurant was opened by a long-time employee of The Plaza Hotel in NYC who used his severance pay as start-up capital for achieving this lifelong dream.
Santorini Taverna is open 7 days a week from Noon to 11pm.
I suggest you give it a try when you are up that way! Highly recommended!
