9/22/2007:
Hoboken loses to Hudson Catholic 7-6. It was their first loss to them since 2003. Their record drops to 1-1. Oh well. Better luck on Friday!
9/1/2007:
Haven’t touched on local school sports much, and now’s a great time to start.
This post will be dedicated to the Hoboken High School Varsity football team.

I would think that the football team has decent graduation rates b/c you have to have a decent GPA in most districts to participate in sports (which would imply you will graduate). That being said, the Hoboken school system’s budget for Athletics is about 2x what I would expect (if not higher) for a district of only 2,000 kids.

This is blatantly late, but after reading all of these comments I felt compelled to respond. I’m going to be quite honest with you, as a college student living in Hoboken and attending Stevens Tech, I have my fair share of late nights throughout the week, be it returning from random city excursions at 1 or 2 am on a Friday or Saturday or just walking back from the pool on campus at 10-11pm on weeknights. I live over in the Curling Club, and I’ve gotten 1 report/e-mail alerting me about any sort of potentially worrying crime that should concern my well-being during those late, long walks.
To be quite honest, 8thst, your line “I don’t feel the need to procreate and join any club that would have YOU as a member.” I find to be utterly despicable. When you produce such callous remarks, you really have no right to be commenting on anyone’s grammar or English usage. It’s truly disgusting that you would react so harshly simply because someone took a quote out of context in a way only intended to remain positive. High School students aren’t the only people with grammar issues out there — anyone who uses instant messenger services (likely used in your office if that is your work environment) is bound to suffer a drop in usage/expression skills, as evidenced in many studies/related of the shortening habits of IM programs (Think “How r u” for starters).
As with any public school, you really can’t lump every student together. If there are in fact IB and AP programs available, that means you have some of the best and brightest students attending the school, and really looking at overall test scores and NCLB-esque required statistics is a joke of a litmus test anyway for the educational system. There are going to be kids that pass and kids that don’t, and a few that don’t give a crap as well. However, those in the latter group can be controlled reasonably, sports being a great way to achieve that. In addition, if the numbers provided earlier are correct, and HHS graduates 91+%, that’s really not a horrible number. Just be happy you have the resources available to you that comes with the territory of Hudson County taxpayer dollars, vs for example schools in Camden County which struggle mightily. The 37.7% planning for 4 year college is a greater cause for concern in today’s economic and business environment than the graduation rate is anyway, because those are the 8% that aren’t going to want to be helped anyway. Make a change that improves the 37.7% figure, and when you see positive trends in the value you’ve got a real litmus test for success of the school.
