How many dogs in Hoboken?

how-many-dogs-in-hoboken.jpgA reader wrote in asking for assistance for settling a bet she had about dogs in Hoboken:

“Hi,

I’m wondering if you could settle a bet for me. How many dogs are living in Hoboken? I’m guessing 15,000-20,000. It sounds really high but they are everywhere! My friend says 5000.
Do you know where we can get an actual number?

Thanks!”

I responded:
“That’s a tough estimate.

I don’t believe we can get accurate numbers of dog licenses in town, because they don’t keep track of who moves out. Estimating might be the only way to go. Last census has us with around 38,000 -39,000 people. My guess it’s over 50,000 now, and will be 60,000 by 2010. If one out of 10 people own a dog, then 5,000 seems right.

But It’d be safe to say you lost your bet!”
I have a problem with dogs tied to the outdoor cafe fences that force pedestrians into single file or out on the street to get by. Worse than the double strollers, in my view, at least with those you don’t have to worry that the kid in the stroller will slobber all over you as you are trying to get through.
Sounds like someone could use a few days in an Indian slum. You’re life must be pretty hard. What a douchebag.

WOW.

Dogs do not belong at restaurants.
neither do people that can’t be in social situations other than what’s only comfortable to them.

My guess is that the NYC DoH is way off. If you go by registered dogs in Hoboken, there are about 600. Obviously not the case. The department of health probably has no idea. It was a law on the books at one time, probably still is, that the police had to go door to door each year and take a count. Now we know they don’t do that anymore but sure would be interesting. Well, even at 2,800, they can still sway a vote. I think are about 2,000 just in my building. 😯

A quick check of the New York City Department of Health website shows that they last estimated the dog population of NYC to be 530,000. NYC population is about 8.2 million, so if we use NYC as a point of comparison to Hoboken we have about 2,800 dogs. More than enough for this mile square town.
