8/21/2007:

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with Dan McLoughlin, who (along with his wife Annie) recently opened Garden Street Music in the lower level of 1018 Washington Street.

Garden Street Music is a combination recording studio and music school unlike most other places because they design everything for the individual student and incorporate professional recording services in their workshops. Additionally, the students get the same instructor every week. They give piano, guitar, voice, violin and bass lessons to all ages, styles and skill levels.

It originally started on Garden St. (hence the name) when the apartment above Dan and Annie become vacant. They gave lessons there, but quickly out-grew their space (as well as tested the patience of some neighbors).

They now have a 2000 Sq. Ft. Space that can accommodate their growing business. The studio is filled with old and new school equipment and instruments. Most of the recording process is analog, up until the point where it’s digitally recorded. See their studio inventory here.

Dan began his career as an recording engineer at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock, NY, and had worked with many artists over the years. Artists such as Joe Jackson, Robert Fripp, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 10,000 Maniacs, Weezer, The Breeders and even his own band, The Push Stars, who had their song featured on the Something About Mary soundtrack.

He continued his stop-n-go career bouncing between recording gigs and touring for many years. He eventually met his future wife while playing a gig with The Push Stars at Maxwell’s and they almost immediately fell in love. She, however, lived in Los Angeles at the time. After all the back and forth they finally settled down in Hoboken.

While Dan is the talent of this partnership, he credits Annie for being the brains behind this operation, and turning into what it is today.

On top of the standard music lessons and recording sessions, Garden Street Music also has a fun “Rock Camp” three days a week for kids 7-12 that are existing students. He groups them together and teaches them how to be a “band”. Sort of along the lines of that Jack Black movie “Rock School”.

I really got the sense of Joy Dan has running this business. He promotes the love of music and believes in good teaching discipline for the students. He truly is a bit of a perfectionist when running a recording session, too. It’s nice to see someone passionate about what they do for a living.

Welcome to Washington Street, Garden Street Music!
