The prevents backwash or in some cases the backwash can cause an air buble to get caught in the pump housing and you will be screwed because the pump will run and no water will go out. Important do not use a cheap shit plastic valve get a brass one ,it will cost more but it will work forever. This might seem stupid but make sure the valve is installed in the right direction,DUH. Whatever type of sump pump you use you must use a check valve.
