How many double parkers?

[Reminiscing Hoboken411’s Five Year Anniversary…]

Will double parking ever improve in Hoboken?

Shot this video experiment a few years ago – do you think double parking has gotten worse or better? Perhaps if we had more residential-only parking garages, things would improve.

How many double parkers are there in Hoboken?

I always wondered how many cars were double parked in Hoboken at a given point in time. Unless you have satellite surveillance technology, it’s kind of hard to figure out.

So yesterday, I drove up and down various streets in town to see what I could whip together on video. Did the major streets (Wash, Bloom, Hudson, Willow, and parts of a few others). This footage is from between 2:15 – 2:45pm.

I sort of screwed up the “count” of how many.. but it was close to 80 double parked cars driven by in just half an hour. And it was mid-day during the week! Some of the hot spots (like by Fiore’s) were oddly missing the usual suspects. Other people even double parked when there were many available spots nearby!

No wonder it’s an ongoing problem, there are just too many of them to handle!

Here is why creating more parking garages will not change the double parking that constantly happens:
People are lazy
I have seem people double park right next to legal parking spaces!
Wow so lazy
The only thing that will decrease the double parking is start actually ticketing for it

The trolleys which ran on electric used to run up and down Washington Street all day and night and were free.
Well, remember when Mayor Roberts was proposing bringing the trolleys back by buying some of the old Newark City Subway Cars? Are you surprised that something the mayor made a big deal about never became a reality? Would you be any less surprised if I told you all this talk of his happened to be around election time? What really annoys me lately is that driver for Its Greek to Me- you know the one with the black honda accord which is nearly ALWAYS blatantly parked completely across the crosswalk on 6th? Don’t tell me the cops never happened to notice the people having to walk out into Washington St. to avoid this guy… shame on Its Greek to Me for encouraging this as well. Way to be a good neighbor.
I absolutely agree with you that they need to bring the trolleys back into town. I did remember Roberts trying to push for this, but what ever happened to this? I have been trying to get one of my friend’s to bring the petty from New York to Hoboken but City Council – keeps on ignoring it and saying it would cause more traffic and possible lawsuits b/c there is not enough space… Read more »

Well, in short, the election was over.
A trolley up and down Washington is a great idea. Remove parking on Washington Street as well and add a bike path. If they do this, they need to build Public Parking Garages. And they could build one next to Barnes & Noble where a flat lot currently sits. It’s not rocket science, but its not being done.
no more garages though, garages only creates more traffic, but i like the idea of a trolley.
