Washingtonstreet...
you should get those signs for moving... The part about going 72 hours in advance so they post them 48 in advanc is right... the part about the parking authority towing your cars because it is not a moving truck is NOT correct. they will only tow someone out of your space if someone(you) calls the parking authority. Get them at both addresses and when you travel between the houses stick some garbage cans in the spot because people are stupid.

I like to get the signs early even if I dont need them at exactly that time. since if you do need to tow it can take a good hour. If you get teh signs for 7am the cops will tow cars after 8am the parking authority does it. I like getting them for 7 and working with the cops.

Like others said, if possible give as much notice as possible. I try to get it in so they they are posted before the weekly street cleaning to give the people as much advance notice as possible. If you can do that it will make it less likely you will need to have to get someone towed. but honestly I find that even when I do this people park right in front of the signs the night before so no matter how far in advance they are posted you cant stop someone from parking there and then oversleeping/forgetting.

I normally get them for 7am for construction jobs and the cops are normally good about trying to call people if they have hoboken stickers. If they start to go for the tow truck I always ask if they can look up the owner.

But a note for others.. yea the rules are 48 hours in advance they need to be posted. A good rule of thumb if you are parking outside a house under construction you should make sure you check your car no more then every other night.

I just got off the phone with the Hoboken Parking Utility regarding these signs and figured I'd share what I found out with 411 readers. My roommate & I are moving on Aug. 15 from one apt in Hoboken to another so these signs would be great for us. They informed me that you have to go to the parking utility at least 72 hours in advance since they are required to put them up 48 hours in advance, and need to come in Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm, and ask for Kim or Michele. I then asked if there was something I put in the windshield of my car to designate that my car is allowed to be there for moving and she explained that it's only for moving trucks. When I told her that my roommate and I are moving ourselves using our 2 SUV's and my boyfriends pick-up truck she put me on hold to ask her supervisor. Then she informed me that it's ok with them for us to use our own vehicles but that the ordinance only allows residents to get them for moving trucks so we could still be ticketed & towed. So now we are forced to either get a moving truck or just pray we can get a spot relatively close so we're not lugging furniture and whatnot all over Hoboken.

On a side note: I personally find these signs obnoxious but thought it would be helpful for moving. I think they should be required to be up the street cleaning before, so if street cleaning is Wed 10-11, they should go up then for anytime before the next street cleaning. That would eliminate the unnecessary ticketing & towing. However, I think Hoboken likes these signs as it equals $$$ for the city. It just frustrating when you follow the parking rules and get screwed over by these signs that are sparatically put up.

These things are all over the place - I might just perpetually request one for myself. $300 a month isn't bad for a private space in front of my condo.

Obviously I'm kidding but it does seem that people are requesting these more frequently these days.

I wish city hall would limit the number of signs they give out. On my block there are 4 different buildings undergoing a gut renovation. With all of the contractors requesting temporary parking signs, it is impossible to park on my street!

I saw a fellow ripe up one of these signs and he looked like he would tear up another, but he saw me watching him and walked on. I tried to put the torn down sign back up, but I didn't have any tape on me.

This same thing happened to me in 2002 on 7th and Bloomfield. Meanwhile, I lived on that block and walked past my car that morning and still didn't see a temporary no parking sign. I came back from work and my car was gone and there was a big dumpster where my car used to be. Naturally, I freaked out and called the police. I got a ticket and had to pay the towing company. I went to court to fight it because the police officer wrote the ticket as being parked in front of an apartment on 2nd and Bloomfield but the tow company had the correct 7th and Bloomfield tow location. Anyway, I got out of it, and got my towing fee back. :P

CRY me a river.....

seriously, this happens all the time. lazy people should walk by their cars once a day and check that all is kosher.

and the letter wasn't all that great. quite -- i'm assuming he meant quiet.

wasted time reading this.

John Corea was actually very helpful for me. I had gotten a “prohibited parking” ticket even though I was not in a prohibited space. I took pictures of where my car was parked and mailed them to him. He called me back and told me I still had to go to court at 6pm on a Tuesday night, but at least when they called me up to the stand he showed up and explained the issue to the prosecutor and the ticket was dismissed.
You know what would be a great website/program the city would be a website that lists where these signs are posted. And you can log-in and post where your car is. This way you can (a) remember where your car is and (b) be notified if there's a temporary police sign going up or (c) your car is in a flood zone....on cinder blocks, etc....
Me fail English, that's unpossible....

Sorry, made some late changes and forgot to make sure it read correctly.
