Jeep Cherokee owners beware?

Letter: Jeep Cherokee’s are hot item for car thieves

Hoboken411 reader Derek has had some bad luck with his Jeep Cherokee this year – and apparently he’s not the only one. He writes:

“There’s been a huge string of Jeep Cherokee car thefts in Hoboken. At least 5 Jeep Cherokees were stolen over this past Halloween weekend.

Our Jeep Cherokee first got stolen from Hoboken in August – and police found it 2 weeks later in Newark, NJ. It took 3 months for the insurance company to file the paperwork to have it fixed up. We finally got our Jeep back a few weeks ago – and a moment later… gone again.

Wanted to see if we need to get the word out to all the other folks with Jeep Cherokees. Because they’re going like hot cakes!

Lots of car thieves come from the Essex county, and usually the vehicle of choice was the Acura. Very fast and according to the AG not allowed to persue a vehicle in flight for fear of danger to themselves cops and innocent people.
This past weekend a choirboy from newark was killed in a stolen jeep on rt#21 in newark, I guess they a either popular or easy to boost.
same here. my wife’s ’99 cherokee was stolen last year near 11th and garden. it was recovered about a month later on a residential street in elizabeth with the ignition busted and very little other damage. both hoboken and elizabeth police said that cherokee thefts are a very common occurrence.

Just happened to my ’99 Jeep Cherokee too… parked at 9th & Grand. They jimmied the lock open, cracked the steering column and ignition trying to hotwire it, but they screwed it up so they didn’t get it. The cop and tow truck guy said they were amateurs. I’m happy she didn’t get stolen, but obviously not so happy that I have to get it fixed again. The same thing happened about 3 years ago. 😥

About 5 years ago, I woke up for work one morning, had my 2000 Cherokee Sport parked on Hudson St. across the st. from the Starbucks. When I get to my car, I see someone sitting on my driver’s side of the car. I start running towards the car, and it’s a Hoboken cop. After asking the cop what he was doing in my car, he said to look at the steering column and showed me what looked like chewed up damage from an alligator and a great white fighting underneath the steering column. Cop said to me that they couldn’t steal the truck cause the ignition has this sensor that once you try to mess with it, it will shut off for the thief AND the car owner. I believe every Jeep has that feature from “99-‘2000 and up as the cop told me. I really didn’t know about it or believe it until the tow truck driver groaned about it as it’s a nightmare for them to tow Jeeps with that ignition shut down feature. Usually, what was told to me by friends that are cops is that they will steal parts from the Honda’s and Acura’s and use SUV’s as to serve as a ride to haul their stolen goods.
