3/19/2008 Update:
Ok, not breaking news (who ever said 411 was a newspaper anyway?), but the old Quiet Woman quietly has new owners, and will be changing the name to “Northern Soul.” While that sounds more like a band name, I’m sure they wanted to establish a new identity for the place.
From what I heard, some renovations are planned to spruce up the place, and have already even installed a new red felt on the pool table.
Description – Irish Pub in the back of town.
Services – Bar, jukebox, darts, pool table, live music.
Address – 557 1st St, Hoboken, NJ 07030

Just to be a total dick about the regulations, VISA’s website says that merchants aren’t allowed to require minimum purchase amounts, and you can submit a complaint through the bank that issued your credit card.

When you factor in what VISA charges restaurants, depending on your merchant account agreement, the difference in charges between $18 and $20 in transaction fees is between .04 – .06 cents. So regardless of what you think of the guy who got pissed off about the minimum, you lost a customer who may have come back on a saturday night and spent that $100 Katie mentioned along with some of his friends.
Just another way to look at it.

seems it was an ATM card. this guy doesn’t even have a credit card. the chances of him coming in and dropping a C-note are about zero. but his claim that he won’t be going back is also a lie. it’s the only bar for blocks and he’ll have to go in there to meet friends. and all this because he was too cheap to buy another round. see the lesson here? don’t get mad. have another beer!

Strand, I see your point, and I always carry cash for just this reason, but I think the point here is intent. It’s not like the guy had a beer and tried to charge it. It was an eighteen dollar tab, not a four dollar tab. If you are going to accept credit and debit as a form of payment, you have to be somewhat flexible. I just don’t think its worth losing a customer over.

Hoboken runs on debit cards, so this is total bullshit. Fuck ‘em HT!

I agree with HT. The establishment (bar, restaurant, grocery store) agreed to play by VISA’s rules for the convenience of the customer and profitability. So did the customer. The bartender erred and changed the rules of the game at the buzzer. He was probably a lazy-sack and didn’t want to go through the effort of swiping the card and finding a pen. I’m sure he wasn’t too busy with a full house. “The Customer is Always Right.” Retail mantra.

the thing is, there are a million businesses in hoboken that all try and play this game of setting minimums for credit card purchases, I think there was a past discussion of this a couple of months ago. I really don’t understand the logic of trying to fight with a customer WHO IS RIGHT and knows the rules. It takes a lot more to gain a customer and almost nothing to lose one and you can bet the word of mouth the disgruntled customer is generating can’t help them.

While it might be illegal, I see signs posted in almost every bodega, gas station, news stand and bar, requesting a $10 or $20 minimum when using a debit/credit card for payment. Most of them use the word “please”. I do not have signs posted in my establishment. Yet. I am charged between 1.5 and 3% per transaction depending on the card, ie. ,Visa, MC,Amex, and have a 2-3 day period before being paid. I always encourage my patrons to dig for cash or use the ATM outside the building. Most people have a clue, but you’d be surprised at how many asshats will use a debit card to pay for a beer or a glass of wine, then don’t want to use the ATM because it charges them a dollar. These are “customers” no one needs or wants. Bartenders don’t implement these rules, the owners do. Too many people go out looking to pick and fight that battle.

Every bar in hoboken has this rule, weather or not they enforce it all the time they all have it. Its a casualty of going to a bar in hoboken, if you do not like it theres nobody forcing you to go to the bars here. I know all the bartenders on 1st st, except at odonahues (mainly because they change their staff every week), and they all say before you start a tab, “theres a $20 minimum on cards”, I will guarantee it was said to hometeam, im guessing he only hears what he wants to hear. Hey you never know maybe the bartender thought you were a big spender and thought theres no need to point this out, i doubt it though after not even leaving a dollar on the bar for 3 or 4 drinks but again you never know. Why live in hoboken if you cannot afford it, move 2 the heights or weehawken, buy less britney cds, lay off the cherry flavor pez, i dont know, whatever it takes, but do not go to a bar of all places and embarrass yourself by not tipping the bartender. And deffinelty do not then go on to a forum and write about it, Jesus christ man have some dignity. Lets be realistic here folks, the bar is not going to close because this guy is pissed of and Hometeam is never going to get ahead in life because he is living beyond his means in a town that costs alot to live in but if you have the $$$ can be lots of fun……Nuff Said
The ironic thing here is that if he had of just ordered another drink he probably would of got his forth free. More drink = more fun = more chance of sex drugs and rock n roll. Bet if the bartender is reading this hes thanking his lucky charms he didnt give you that free drink, if he was lucky he mite of got a nickel maybe even a quater, eh hometeam, eh. No hard feelings man, just busting your ballbag, i love you……..peace and beats

It’s most definitely not illegal. At most they’re in breech of contract (their contract with the card companies).

I agree with DeuxBieres about the asshats who charge $3 to their debit/credit card. It’s gotten out of control and it makes you want to commit murder when you are standing in line at CVS.
But what this guy was saying was, it’s 18 DOLLARS. They could have let the guy slide. Personally I dont see a problem with charging $10 – $12 to a debit/credit card. It happens online every day and guess what, online retailers pay a higher percentage. Transaction fees are the price of doing business. Especially in a place like Hoboken. Eh, whatever. If I had been the owner I would have accepted it.

Katie is right, it’s not illegal, its just against their contract with the cc. However if there was a surcharge to use the credit card it would be illegal.

I don’t understand why bars fuss over this. The highly inflated price of a beer/ drink pays for the transaction fee 100 times over. And no, not every bar in town has the minimum charge in place.

Good call Dr. Midnight. I would have taken the card on the $18 tab as well, unless the patron was a jerk.
Prices might seem high to you Devilgirl, but it goes along with the $10K rent, $2K liability insurance, $6K payroll & wage taxes, $3k utilities, fundraisers, donations, buybacks etc, the list goes on. I might get that domestic beer for $0.61 per bottle, and sell it for $3.75, but that means I need to sell a hell of a lot of bottles to cover my monthly fixed costs. Please understand I am not complaining or whining, I love what I do and enjoy people, and providing a decent fun place for them to congregate and enjoy themselves, and wouldn’t want to do anything else. Not too many people take the costs of running a bar/pub/tavern into consideration.

I find it hard to believe this actually happened. I’ve been at the bar when people sit down and ask to open a tab and the bartender replied, “By the way, it’s a $20 minimum.” I was also there when a girl ordered a beer and the guy behind the bar was like, “You can have a beer but you only have three minutes to drink it.” Any other bar…they’d sell it to you…THEN kick you out. I was really impressed by the bartender’s forthrightness. Even though the girl was warned about the time-frame she opted to take her chances and chugged the beer in three minutes. Nice. Back to the main topic…it’s interesting that such a huge discussion has opened up over the $20 minimum. It’s obvious that everyone has an opinion on this matter. Point being, everyone knows how it works!! And, if you don’t, then ask. As well, there’s a store on the corner with an ATM a block and a half away. You should consider yourself lucky if this is your worst concern in life…really not something to get so steamed about!

Hey HT, did he even ask for your card when you first started drinking? Everyone is right, the 3 bucks on a gd atm card is THE single most annoying thing on the planet, a close second are ipods, and close 3rd is people sharing an ipod.
This bartender was either inexperienced (been there), a dick, or just plain stupid to not just run it and explain the policy so you know next time. Kiss your tip goodbye dumbass. How can anyone be so stupid?

Does anyone know why the new ownership? What happened? I am sure its a step in the right direction, just wondering because as much as QW was a dive, I liked it just like that and hope it doesnt change into another trendy bar.
