Letter: Some Hoboken restaurants emit raunchy smells

Hoboken411 reader Rob sent in this letter about a unpleasant smelling situation near Baja Mexican Restaurant on 14th Street uptown.

“I live over on 14th & Washington and there is a restaurant on the corner there (Baja) that since yesterday has been pumping some weird stuff out of their basement, onto the street and down the storm drains… and it smells like raw sewage!

At first I thought it was from some flooding but the stench was so bad last night, I had to close my top floor window. When I went out to walk the dogs this morning, again, pumping and unbearable smell. Everyone walking by was holding their noses and it seems to be the conclusion that it is some type of sewage… too strong to just be water. Yesterday it was a green, antifreeze color and today it is just something different. I smelled some bleach at one point last night and then that faded.

What can be done about this?”

Maybe it has something to do with 14th Street? Because Puerto Spain stinks like hell too!

Oh please, dumb story. There are restaurant/bar smells all over town. Ever pass by a place that is having it’s grease traps cleaned. Disgusting smell. Live downtown? Try walking up or down First St. on a weekend when they put out the empty bottles? Smells like stale funky beer from Washington down to Park Ave.

Yeah, I’ve noticed this pumping a few times lately. It really reeks!
