Hurricane Irene – Additional Information

Important information about Hurricane Irene & Hoboken

I’m going to touch on a few important points here about Hurricane Irene which is coming our way – “just in case.”

For one (thanks to Hoboken411 reader Ian) – this is an interesting map that shows the flooding impact for certain category hurricanes hitting our area directly.

Note that about 80% of Hoboken is under water with a Category 1 – and nearly 90% if it’s a Category 2. The safe zone in all circumstances is up at Stevens Institute. If the storm comes through bigger than anticipated, expect everything west of Washington St. to be flooded. Not a pleasant thought whatsoever.

Latest map shows sickening amounts of rain

While we’re still three or four days from “certainty,” this forecast model below shows a biblical amount of moisture hitting our area.

This is certainly not guaranteed – but it’s important to know the potential. And you think the economy was bad before? My God, this will put a dent in our collective well-being if it pans out. Pray for the least-damaging outcome, and help neighbors if you can!

I have relatives that live down near LBI, they’re safe they are west of the GSP, he told me its absolutely crazy down there. The is a story going around there that emer. ser. workers telling people that refuse to leave to write their name, address, phone#,& a contact number on a piece of paper and put it in your shoe so they can id your body if and when they find it. Truth or scare tactic?

Escape — they did that in the Carolina’s too. Probably a bit of a scare tactic for those areas with mandatory evacuation. They really do not want to have to send police and fire in to those areas so they are using any tactics they can get to get them out. Was at Target today buying stuff for the doom and the woman in line in-front of me at the register was buying a few gallons of bleach, several packs of C size batteries and six bottles of Pantene Shampoo. I don’t know what the heck she is planning.

Storm surge question — how broad an area would that cover? So other than the fact that we normally flood at Park and 1st anyway– what effect is the storm surge likely to have based on the hurricane strength at this point. How high would the waters rise?

barbf ..what it comes down to is the real estate agents never forwarned owners that the town is below sea level .in other words they don’t give a chit.. So many astute educated people who migrated here should have asked questions..in regard to the intangibles..They all deserve a slap or two..that commission check is all they care about..if people plan to plant them selves here or are just in transit, this town is and never was a utopia for visitors. Hobokens only asset is the tunnels and ferrys our of town..Some what like putting lipstick on a pig ,yet it’s still a pig..It’s not a bnr vs yuppie more than reality that many are coming to terms with..Most of the bnr are gone or leaving this bee hive ..Never saw so many new comers bitch and moan about what they cannot change while many bnr delt with crissis in regard to inclement weather etc.. Many people have no place to go ..reminds me of the mayor of new orleans telling the people to seek high ground..wow. 🙁 [quote comment=”210073″]Storm surge question — how broad an area would that cover? I’ve seen a lot of talk about storm surge, but haven’t seem a map that shows _how much_ storm surge there will be. I found this map that kind helps …
