Why is Arts & Music Festival only downtown?

Many Hoboken Businesses think festival should rotate!

This topic has been a “seed for thought” over the past couple years – however, since our recent Hoboken Spring Arts & Music Festival this year, the number of local businesses that think a change is in order has increased dramatically.

The issue is that many uptown businesses are wondering why the Arts & Music Festival must take place downtown twice a year. They say – “Why not make it uptown half the time? Why are we second fiddle to downtown?”

Good point!

What is preventing an uptown festival in Hoboken?

I tried figuring out what some of the excuses might be:

 • The city will claim it’s for “safety reasons.” If so, I can’t think of any.
 • Uptown is more “residential.” Really? No one lives downtown?
 • More businesses on both sides of the street downtown. Sure – but do the uptown bars & shops not count?

Do you think the city should split the Arts & Music Festivals between uptown & downtown each year? If not, why?

I think this is a great idea. Maybe we can shift a couple of the other festivals uptown, too. Seems fair enough.

“Uptown is more “residential.” Really? No one lives downtown?”

Between 7th and 11th street there are only three businesses on the east side of the street, on the west side there’s what? 2 dozen? Many of them doctors, masseuses, and offices. I think it’s pretty safe to say, that yes, above Seventh St., Washington is more residential.

The A&MF bring thousands of people into town, and into local businesses, moving the event to Sinatra would A) make it harder to get to, and B) mean the only people to profit from it would be the out of town vendors.

Move them all to Sinatra Drive between 5th and 11th. Plenty of room on both sides of the road for booths and will accomodate both uptown and downtown residents. This also keeps Washington open for buses and regular traffic.

Sounds good on paper, but are you sure you want 50,000 people so close to the water with Hoboken’s track record?
Move them all to Sinatra Drive between 5th and 11th. That has some good thought behind it, but do you think Washington Street is anymore secure. There are very obvious slopes in the pavement on the road and water pipes giving way uptown. Washington Street is clearly another accident waiting to happen.
50,000 people doesn’t actually help the situation.
Sounds good on paper, but are you sure you want 50,000 people so close to the water with Hoboken’s track record?
