Neglected traffic light causes angst
12th Street Traffic Signal takes forever to get fixed
The light at 12th & Washington St. was malfunctioning over the past week or two – getting stuck on yellow – and causing minor snarls near this intersection until the timing mechanism reset itself. This happens from time to time here in Hoboken, as well as in cities across the country that use similar mechanical timers.
Many residents called the Hoboken Police about this headache – and HPD relayed the message to the Hoboken Traffic & Signal Division for restitution. However, Hoboken411 reader John was dissatisfied that significant time went by without corrective action.
“As most hard working commuters in this town, I have a hard time negotiating all the double parking and pedestrians who ignore the traffic laws in the State of NJ (Title 39). The traffic light at 12th and Washington has pushed me to send this letter.
I have called the Hoboken Police Department over four times to notify them that the Traffic Signal at 12th and Washington St doesn’t work. Now, before everyone jumps on the wagon to say its not their problem, IT IS THEIR PROBLEM. It is a SAFETY issue.
I have tried to call the Signals and Traffic Division, but the phone rings and no one picks it up. I then call the non-emergency number at the PD, and guess what? They act like its always the first time they have heard about it.
Does the dispatchers or officers utilize a CAD System? (Computer Aided Dispatch). Do they make a recording in a log book to have a follow -up with the Traffic Signal Division? Do the Traffic Officers on their motorcycles or the officers on directed patrol ever think the call in to dispatch that the light at the intersection isn’t working?
Why hasn’t anyone fixed a problem that has been ongoing for over two weeks?”
Why can’t city can’t get act together?
- Do you think John is right to think each broken traffic light is the Hoboken Police Department’s responsibility? The HPD did their job and notified the proper department. Whether the light gets fixed or not isn’t their responsibility.
- Should police officers be taken out of routine patrol to direct traffic 24 hours a day until Traffic & Signal fixes the problem? With police cuts & budget problems, I doubt residents want even less cops patrolling.
