Neglected traffic light causes angst

12th Street Traffic Signal takes forever to get fixed

The light at 12th & Washington St. was malfunctioning over the past week or two – getting stuck on yellow – and causing minor snarls near this intersection until the timing mechanism reset itself. This happens from time to time here in Hoboken, as well as in cities across the country that use similar mechanical timers.

Many residents called the Hoboken Police about this headache – and HPD relayed the message to the Hoboken Traffic & Signal Division for restitution. However, Hoboken411 reader John was dissatisfied that significant time went by without corrective action.

“As most hard working commuters in this town, I have a hard time negotiating all the double parking and pedestrians who ignore the traffic laws in the State of NJ (Title 39). The traffic light at 12th and Washington has pushed me to send this letter.

I have called the Hoboken Police Department over four times to notify them that the Traffic Signal at 12th and Washington St doesn’t work. Now, before everyone jumps on the wagon to say its not their problem, IT IS THEIR PROBLEM. It is a SAFETY issue.

I have tried to call the Signals and Traffic Division, but the phone rings and no one picks it up. I then call the non-emergency number at the PD, and guess what? They act like its always the first time they have heard about it.

Does the dispatchers or officers utilize a CAD System? (Computer Aided Dispatch). Do they make a recording in a log book to have a follow -up with the Traffic Signal Division? Do the Traffic Officers on their motorcycles or the officers on directed patrol ever think the call in to dispatch that the light at the intersection isn’t working?

Why hasn’t anyone fixed a problem that has been ongoing for over two weeks?”

Why can’t city can’t get act together?

  • Do you think John is right to think each broken traffic light is the Hoboken Police Department’s responsibility? The HPD did their job and notified the proper department. Whether the light gets fixed or not isn’t their responsibility.
  • Should police officers be taken out of routine patrol to direct traffic 24 hours a day until Traffic & Signal fixes the problem? With police cuts & budget problems, I doubt residents want even less cops patrolling.

It would have been appropriate for the police to step in and do some traffic management until the light was fixed. They’d do it for other, busier, intersections so unless something serious was happening (like a robbery), I can’t see why one officer could be allocated to keep the peace on that corner.

I get that the cops are facing cutbacks and there is quite a lot of paranoia about what’s best for Hoboken – budget, safety, etc. – but I don’t really see the police patrolling much. I see them driving around in their cars. I hardly see them out on the streets doing patrolling like I see in other urban environments. I’ve even seen officers walk around the downtown areas of suburban places. I think walking a beat would help the city and show a stronger presence of safety.

And lets be honest, if we took one rookie off of “patrol” to handle a traffic jam and something deadly happened… It would be easy for them to join their fellow officers and put their resources to more appropriate use. I’d actually welcome a cop on the corner; I’d feel better knowing they were there if I needed them.

Who attacked Signal and Traffic? They get their orders when to do what from the
MAYOR…as far as the comment that nobody does anything around here, and calling the workers morons, don’t ever see me in the street because I do work here, and neither myself nor my son are MORONS….Much work was done in THIS WARD on safety and lights and sewers and flooding, and I DID MUCH. HOW DARE YOU INSULT ME OR MY SONS…GROW UP…as far as 411 doing anything here on aforementioned activities, he did NOT…

Definitely a safety issue, that’s for sure. Regardless if they have CAD or write it down, the information doesn’t do a hill of beans unless someone actually looks and says “Hey, we’ve gotten seven calls on this and need to act.” The computer isn’t going to tell them that (automatically, anyway) and the dispatchers are busy enough trying to get the cops to various non-emergency/emergency calls in town.

Honestly, John’s best bet was putting it on 411. That seems to be the only way things get done around this town, lately.
