Reader Mail: Building Contractors

12/4/2008 Bump:

About a year and a half ago – a Hoboken411 reader had a question about local Hoboken building contractors.

I figured I’d “bump” this thread – because another reader is wonder the same thing – but this time for kitchen renovations. Share your recommendations – and why – in the comments section.

Any reliable kitchen contractors in Hoboken?

“Do any readers out there have any suggestions to help us find a fair, competent, and reliable contractor to renovate a kitchen? We’ve been trying to find someone for about 18 months (on and off, to be fair) and have had a really hard time finding a contractor who works in Hoboken and who will take the job. Several who do return our calls and show up for appointments don’t want to get licenses or lack the right insurance coverage.

The last person I had lined up disappeared after we had verbally agreed to move ahead. Any feedback on experiences with kitchen renovations in Hoboken (positive or negative) would greatly help us. It’s not a big job (no structural changes, some minor plumbing and electrical work, replacing the floors, cabinets, and countertops), but we want to make sure it’s done right.”

hoboken-brownstone-building-contractor.jpgThis story has been on the radar for a while, and 411 reader Nicole sent an email in asking about some various contractors to perform her façade restoration.

A few things I’d like to accomplish with this post:

1. Please check the current list of Contractors and Architects. I believe many might be missing. I know that Jaime (sp?) Restoration and a few others are not on the list. They might not be based in Hoboken, but if they’re used all over town (like they are), they should be included. Please let me know what others you feel should be added to the list.

2. Nicole needs help finding one particular contractor. Can anyone help shed some light on that?

3. What are your recommendations as far as builders, general contractors and architects? Any great experiences? Awful Jobs? Tips and tricks?

Thanks very much!

Hi,

I love your site and find it so useful. I’m on it almost every day reading up on whats going on in Hoboken…my friends all love it too.

I had a question about it. I saw someone posted a question (well i think you ultimately posted it) regarding cleaning services and I was wondering if there was a way to post another question asking for some references.

We need to have the facade of our building restored and are clueless about who to use, not use, how to find them, etc. We have the name jamie restoration, KDK, and FPV? The latter of which we cannot seem to find the number to anywhere but they did a house down the street. (if only i had been smart enough to write the number down!)

If there is any way to ask the readers of 411 for any info on this, I would be grateful!

thank you!

While we are on the subject, anybody know a good roofer? Thanks!

Hah. I don’t think good roofers exist. We’ve gone through, no exaggeration, close to 10 in the last 5 years. Simpson Roofing bumped his head while giving an estimate and sued us for $10,000. The latest, American Home Improvement, completely re-roofed our building and then it leaked 3 weeks later. Of course he’s out of the roofing business now.

Good luck.
While we are on the subject, anybody know a good roofer? Thanks!
I highly recommend Robert Smith from NJ Under Construction (underconstruction@gmail.com). He did my bathroom and if I ever decide to redo my kitchen, I’ll hire him again. Robert took care of all the building permits, was reliable and finished on time at the budgeted amount.

I dealt with Nastasi, his studio took a very long time for a simple project, lots of money, and the arrogance of the chubby architect is extremely annoying.

I dont know who to recommend because the building department wants you to use their guys ( origination of kickbacks)
