Reader Mail: Horrible Intersection

This post was originally called “Reader Mail: Is courtesy dangerous?”, about a Maxima parked illegally, a police shield, and a corresponding accident. I’ve since renamed it.

Well less than a month later, another accident in the same intersection, but with injuries this time. NOW IS THE TIME THAT CITY HALL DOES SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Perhaps put some of those orange barriers to PREVENT PARKING at this intersection.

“At 9:20 tonight (4/24/2007) I heard the loud screech of a car slamming on it breaks and then a crash. Crash corner otherwise known as the intersection of Newark and Park had yet another accident. Sadly this one had two injuries, bother were taken away in an ambulance, happily no fatalities. And again there was a car illegally parked on crash corner. While the fault of the crash can not be attributed solely to this negligent truck owner his trucks presence impaired the drivers ability to see and react to one another.

I spoke to a very kind officer who responded to the crash and he to is frustrated by these illegally parked vehicles but unless the car encroaches into the intersection or blocks a crosswalk it is the purview of the Parking Authority to ticket and toe these cars. Since cars are often parked illegally on crash corner you have to wonder why the Hoboken Parking Authority can’t be bothered to do their job and help improve the safety of our roads. I know at least two people tonight who wish they had.

Here are a couple of pics of the accident and the illegally parked truck.” (see more after the previous story and the break)

Original 3/28/2007 post “Reader Mail: Is courtesy dangerous?”:

This was sent in by a reader who wishes to remain anonymous. It’s about the perpetual issue Hoboken has with intersection parking. The reader points out that the car in the pictures may or may not have been the same car that was obstructing the view earlier in the day.

park-newark-intersection.jpg” 411,

The corner of Newark and Park is known for accidents. Driving west on Newark it can be very difficult to see if anyone is traveling North on Park. Often speed combines with carelessness and results in damaged property and injured people. There was just such an incident on Sunday. I live in the area and the crash was so loud I decided to take a look.

I don’t know who was at fault for the accident but I recall seeing a car parked on the SE corner that would have obstructed the view of the drivers.

Coming home from work I noticed a car parked there and while it resembles the one I saw Sunday I can’t say for certain it was the same car. After all wouldn’t the car have a ticket on it if i were the same car? Failing that it would have been towed right?

The next four pictures will describe the problem and why the car may not have been ticketed.”
Speaking of horrible intersections, the circus at the intersection in front of Starbucks during morning rush hour is a situation crying out for a stop light. They used to have a traffic cop direct traffic down there some times, but I haven’t seen him in a while. As it is the constant flow of pedestrians through the crosswalk causes the cars trying to head south on Hudson to block the intersection, waiting for an opening. Not to mention the constant games of chicken between pedestrians and impatient cars over who’s going to stop, which creates an unnecessary unsafe condition.
I wrote a letter to the editor of the Hoboken Reporter about this about two years ago. It got the most prominent placement on the page — first letter. No response from City Hall. Then the old man got run down on Sinatra Drive. That’s when the cop was posted there for a few months.

I have also written to Brian Stack. No response.

NOTHING is going to happen at that corner until Mayor Roberts is unemployed. It would probably cost a lot of money to install a traffic light, and the cops probably told the administrators — “C’mon, we’re already booked tight on weekends, and now you got us standing out in the rain?”

What’s it gonna take? Probably one of the mayor’s kids getting run down at that corner. It’s such a no-brainer, but this administration is incapable of rational thought.

I got screamed at this morning by a woman at the next corner up, by the taxi stand. Apparently, in the driving wind and rain a few others and I weren’t walking fast enough. I said nothing but laughed at her “hurry up and wait” attitude given that she was hurrying us through an intersection so she could wait 5′ closer to the redlight.

What a tool.

it seems to me this problem falls squarley in the laps of the Hoboken Parking authority.
they need a nighttime patrol to deal with after hours violations. especially parking in, or near intersections near yellow painted curbs.
I dont see why there is no procedure for the Police to deal with this problem after hours right now since the parking authority keeps “bankers hours”.

It’s not my job” is a bad answer for a cop to give about anything involving potential property damage , saftey issues, And loss of life.
SOMEBODY step up to the plate on this issue!
