The Readers’ Circle book group meets the 3rd (or 4th) Thursday of the month at 7:00pm in the comfortable and spacious Muller Room of All Saints, 701 Washington Street, in Hoboken. On Thursday, April 28th, the group will meet and discuss the controversial novel by American Poet and author, Deliverance by James Dickey.

His poetry was great, I agree, but don’t overlook To The White Sea, Dickey’s last novel. The Coen Brothers were going to make the movie but it fell through. Too bad – it’s such a cinematic narrative. I re-read Deliverance a couple of years ago – holds up better than ever. The film version of Deliverance doesn’t hold a candle to the novel, imho.

Best known for Deliverance, it’s important to note that James Dickey was one of this country’s greatest poets. Don’t believe me? Read “The Firebombing.” No, really read it. Don’t skim! I know it’s long. Suck it up and get it done. One of the most powerful poems you’ll ever read. It will never leave you.
