Mia, the Bronx Zoo Cobra visited Hoboken!
Bronx Zoo Cobra spent a night in Hoboken, NJ!
Many of you heard about Mia the Bronx Zoo Cobra who had “gone missing” for a week last month. They said they found her just a couple hundred feet from where she was supposed to be. What they didn’t tell you was that she actually spent some time in Hoboken…
She wrote a letter about her experiences here.
Mia the Cobra talks about her Hoboken adventures
Yes, it’s me again, Mia, the Cobra from the Bronx Zoo and I am here to tell you about my adventures while on vacation from my exhibit.
They might have thought I never left but let me tell you differently, it’s a tough place out there. I was able to knock off a few “to do’s” & see some local sights that I had been hearing about from all the NJ tourist that visit my home @ the zoo & here is what I encountered.
After reviewing my options my first stop was to go see what all the hub bub was all about in Hoboken, NJ. I heard both good and bad so let’s review.
After clearly mapping out a strategy I figured I would visit Hoboken on a Friday night so without anyone noticing I slithered down to the 34th St. PATH train and caught a quick ride over… Let me tell you, Snakes on a Plane has nothing on Snakes on a Train! Exiting the PATH I was overtaken by the number of 20-30 year-old patrons gawking at residents exiting the PATH train as if they never saw a woman before. I thought to myself, was this what all the commotion of this town is about? With the smell of stale beer behind me I made my way to City Hall as every good snake should (so I hear.)
It was late and most employees were gone but I made my way through the side door only to encounter the infamous Parking Utility. I was so confused, I didn’t know if I should slither on the left side or the right side of the hall based on their oh so confusing signs displayed on the wall. In either case my sensitive ears could pick up all the ghosts and it was no place for a SNAKE like me.
Next up was the Building Dept. and boy did I have fun here! If I didn’t know any better I would have thought there were party favors being thrown around here like it was going out of style. It was slowly becoming clear & after slithering through the files I now knew why City Hall has so much folklore.
Onwards and upwards to the rent control office which just plain old reeked a foul smell plus I almost slipped through a crack and became lost but I did whatever I wanted so I opted to head directly to the Mayor’s Office. I was amazed to find that there was a TV on only to be showing the movie True Lies, yes, I smirked & hissed and even broke out my cell phone and snapped a few videos to show all my friends later on that the true SNAKE was here. It was getting late & my head was spinning so I thought I should escape this building before I was asked to leave. As leaving I vaguely overheard the music of Sting in my head, how appropriate and ironic I thought.
Slithering down Washington St. I came to 2nd and Washington St. & yup, I had some Johnny Rockets with all the late night drunk revelers. I feel very sorry for these employees whom have to deal with the drunks, wow & I thought it was bad when people tapped on the glass in my exhibit! Oh wait, I even see someone tapping the glass here, nope sorry it was just a scuffle out front and the sound I heard was someone’s head hitting the window, my bad. What is that thumping sound, is this place outside on the corner a restaurant, bar or club? Am I in Seaside North or Hoboken NJ? In either case I am not standing on this velvet rope line to get in, don’t they know who I am and who I know! I need some shut eye so I see some bushes on the corner of 2nd & Bloomfield St. so this looks like a good place to get some shut eye for the night.
What the??? It’s now close to 2am and what is all this screaming and kicking of garbage cans, what can this be? Oh, it’s my friends from earlier whom I saw in the bars leaving now and destructing all the property of home owners but where are the Police and why haven’t I seen them patrolling on foot all night? I’ve heard about St. Patty’s day in Hoboken being crazy but every weekend, wow I have to inform the Cougars and Pigs back at the zoo that is a MUST for them. Finally 3am and now I can catch some shut eye for more adventures tomorrow.
Mia Wakes up to see Hoboken Weekend Aftermath
I make my way through the throngs of out of towners down Washington St. but wait, are these people waiting in line to see me? Hang on I must maneuver around this car accident on 1st & Washington St., it looks like we have a gawker who rear ended someone due to the fact that he has never seen a store front before. How come they don’t wait hours to see me? Look at these people do they not have any self control and why are they waiting for frozen bakery food when you can get this stuff any place? If I didn’t know any better I would have thought they named me Buddy from all the attention I am getting. I am not going near this place but all this food talk is making me hungry so off to find out if this town really does have the best Mutz around?
I make my way up past this building, it says POLICE but I have still yet to see one officer on the street and my final destination is Fran’s Deli. Another line but at least this line moves and I now see why there is a line for here & yes, this place has great mutz! Yum… Now that my stomach is full I think I will venture down to the park and check out the water and view my old stomping ground across the river. A detour, gosh what is it now, a water main break, a crumbling road or a jumper? Damn, I am glad my tax money isn’t funding this town, oh wait, I don’t pay taxes but in either case WOW!
I finally make it to the park and I now feel at home, relaxed with a beautiful view and breeze and a feeling as though I am nowhere near what I have experienced so far. As I slither through the grass I ponder to myself, was my life back at the exhibit that terrible? And if this is what it is like outside would I truly like to raise my little Snakes in this kind of environment? I think not.
Hiss, Sigh, Hiss… I wouldn’t want to hinder the overpopulation of Snakes already in this town.
With that said I make the decision to head back to where the other SNAKES are and I am over come with a feeling of relief as I head back to the Zoo. Will they notice I was ever gone? I don’t know but you can read more in my memoirs in the coming months.
