I have, sorry, HAD shoulder length straight hair. I went to Hair Cult and saw Mariella because my previous stylist at a different salon moved overseas. I asked for “up to 2 inches off the back and just a trim at the front, because I want to keep the length”. We discussed how this would make my hair quite angled towards the front, which I said I liked. I was surprised (and worried) by how quickly Mariella cut my hair, and then annoyed when she took about 3 times longer blow drying it. My hair is already straight and doesn’t need to be tortured for 30 minutes to sit properly. When she was finished, I was shocked by how short it looked. I had gone from hair that touches my collar bone (I even checked a 2 week old photo to be sure I wasn’t imagining things) to a long-ish bob. I’ve had lots of bob haircuts – it used to be my staple – and its an ok cut (not spectacular). The point however, is that its not what I asked for. Comparing my new cut to the photo, I reckon she took 2 inches off the front and 3 off the back. That may not sound huge, but for straight hair at this length, the difference is huge. So, I gave myself 24 hour hours to calm down before writing this review, but the fact is, I’m still hugely disappointed and annoyed that it will take 2 months… Read more »

[quote comment=”91828″]I moved from Hoboken to SOHO in 1995. The only time I ever come back to Hoboken is to return to the best hair stylist in the entire New York Metro area. I have tried them all from Orlando Pita, Fekkai, etc etc and Laurie trumps them at a fraction of the cost. I am rarely moved to write reviews but I can say without any qualifications this is the best spa and hair team around(not just Hoboken, but the city as well). I am always amazed at how great my hair looks. The scalp massage/shampoo, the consultation, and the cut itself always exceeds my expectations. 5 stars

You’re a shill, and Laurie did a terrible job on my hair in 2004.

This past weekend we walked into the salon to book a spa day for my wedding party. We were planning on doing a full spa day for 6 people along with cuts and color and highlights for some. I walked in to find a woman grooming a dog at one of the salon stations with customers in the chairs next to the dog. I was skeeved and walked out. I thought it was disgusting and a total disregard for others. I am highly allergic and decided to call the owner of this salon and inform her what one of her stylist did. I was shocked to learn that the person grooming the dog was the owner. Well, we booked the spa day at another place. I give Hair Cult of Hoboken a major: thumbs down!

Stop giving dogs a bad name. People shit and piss every St Paddy parade and many people out here seem to condone it? Town lets the parade happen so more people can come every year and piss on our steps and poop in our bushes. Dog has an accident, people clean it up, life goes on. How many times have you people been to Petco and a dog does his business? Do you run out, of course not. However a dog in a chair getting groomed around people is very very very fruity and oddball

We get that you don’t like the St Patty’s Day parade. Get over it. You don’t have to mention it in every thread you post to. It’s going to happen this year whether you want it to or not.

Having a dog do his business at a Petco is somewhat expected. It is a pet store is it not? Their employees are trained to deal with it as part of their job. But to have a dog brought into a hair salon and do their business is another issue. People go to day spas to relax and get primped up, not deal with the owners animals. Extremely unprofessional.

I went there twice. First time, when I walked in, I got those stares too. Like, hi, I’m a customer, be nice. Regardless, my hair that I walked in with was a total mess and he did a good job fixing the color, but didn’t do exactly what I wanted. Anyway, I decided to go back since my color was more even and was expecting to get what I wanted this time. He decided not to listen and did what he wanted and the whole time he would tell me how bad my hair was and keep on trying to sell me shampoo. I then decided to pay $50 for the cut, which I was not impressed with and once again he didn’t do what I asked and didn’t even ask if I wanted it blowdried (extra charge) and went ahead and did it when I was going to walk 8 blocks in the rain and ruin it anyway. It was superexpensive and he didn’t disucss options with me or tell me would be more to do what he was doing. Bottom line, I would not go back. It is wierd there, and the chairs are uncomfortable. The only good thing about it is the tea. 😈
