So far it’s been pretty quiet here in the First Ward. I recall in 1995 when my neighbor, Augusta Przygoda, was in a runoff with Theresa Castellano, the water to our block and surrounding neighborhood (then a hotbed of reform politics) was shut off in the early morning, causing no small amount of chaos for those who had to go to work and had hoped to vote beforehand.

Those were the days.

The post above about the history of Pier A park is right on the money. I am one of the 12 people whose vote REALLY counted as I was one of 12 people whose vote that lawsuit sought to invalidate on very flimsy grounds ( the Court ruled my vote was indeed valid). I never knew until just now that Thesesa Castellano was part of bringing that suit. Can you imagine two office towers on that pier???

And by the way, that Port Authority got very petty with Hoboken after that plan was knocked out. The City was sponsering a viewing area on that Pier to watch the parade of tall ships for the ’92 Columbus celebration. About the week before, the Port Authority decided to prevent the people of Hoboken from using the pier that one day claiming it was unsafe, yet one could see private parties there and helicopters there on that “unsafe” pier. This was when there was NO public access to the waterfront except for a sliver along Sinatra drive.

I may not be too good at basic math, but I thought a runoff was only required if no one got more than 50.1% of the vote.

I guess math may work differently in here, but with only 2 candidates, how can one have a runoff?

From this weekend’s Hoboken Reporter:

“… local candidates will win or lose based on how well they pull out their base. This means Theresa Castellano will likely win the 1st Ward without a runoff.”

Let this be motivation to rally the voters who don’t support these crooked incumbents…
