Anthropologie soon at 412 Washington St.
Anthropologie Confirmed – Coming to Hoboken, NJ
Simple Hoboken business update – we received word (kind of a long time ago), that Anthropologie is indeed confirmed coming to the old Blockbuster location at 412 Washington Street.
And to remind everyone of the big question at large: Will this help small local businesses – or just turn Hoboken into “The Giant Mile Square Strip Mall?”
Anthropologie coming to Hoboken, NJ – bad for local boutiques?
9/2/2011 Update:
Word on the street is that the old Blockbuster location at 412 Washington Street is first becoming the new pop-up store for Spirit Halloween (because Office Depot is taking the Barnes & Noble spot), and then in 2012 – woman’s clothing chain Anthropologie will be making this spot a permanent home.
For one – Anthropologie has many locations in NYC – and another one a few miles up the road in Edgewater, NJ. Do you think it makes sense for them to open one here? Do a lot of Hoboken ladies shop there? And what effect would that have on the many small business boutiques currently lining the Avenue? More empty storefronts?
Who’ll fill the massive spot formerly home to Hoboken Blockbuster?
3/28/2011:
A lot of people are wondering what can possibly fill the shoes left behind by Blockbuster Video over at 412 Washington Street.
I found out last week – that this spot costs $30,000 per month to rent. Sure, it’s a big space – but what products or services are so in demand that people in and around Hoboken will flock to it and make it profitable?
One idea I came up with – considering all the Falafel places sprouting up – is to combine them all – into one giant “Falafel Mall” (“Falaf-Mall”). Heck, there’s so much room there – you could probably add a few others – and call it the “Mediterranean Food Court” or something along those lines. Might as well. Then different places can take over the falafel infestation.
What would survive here? More food? A giant bar? An unemployment office?

For everyone: while debate and conversation is encouraged – the “off-topic” nonsense that has transpired is not.
If you want to battle ideals and concepts – please do it in the appropriate threads (like cat fights here – http://hoboken411.com/archives/53376)
Otherwise, I’ll likely remove all further comments that don’t pertain to the old Blockbuster location at 412 Washington Street.
Thanks for your cooperation.

I think Anthropolgie will do really well in Hoboken – and hurt local boutiques in the process.
I agree with Stabone130 “chicks love that Anthropolgie”

I hate this store. over priced crap. i don’t see it lasting long especially paying the rent. It will hurt other stores in the area for sure. At least their prices are their prices and not inflated just because they are in hoboken like other shops.

The only stores it will hurt are those with overpriced apparel like Jesse James and Peper, not the well priced boutiques like Coup de Couer, People and Ruby’s Closet. Anthologie is a high quality store with high, yet fair price points that supports up-and-coming artisits and designers (theanthropologist.com). I’m looking forward to their arrival!

I’m curious to see if in the long run Anthropologie will be successful in Hoboken. I personally like their products, but find them ridicously overpriced. In regards to local shops – I can’t believe Peper is still in business, and I don’t think it will affect Jesse James or Rubee’s. Coup de Couer is like a Forever 21 – there’s no touching that.
In any event – it’s better than another pizza place!

I’m actually thinking we need some larger stores like Anthropologie to attract more shoppers who will then shop at other stores. Think of it like a mall. Just because Anthropologie is there doesn’t mean all the other stores go out of business. If a store has the proper selection of goods at the “right” price, along with an inviting atmosphere and credible staff – it will survive alongside Anthropologie. Personally, I think it’s a good addition to Hoboken. Something has to go in that huge space. Forget the Falafel Mall and put all the Realtors in there!

This store will come in just long enough to put some of the others out of business, then they’ll go out of business too. Perhaps we’ll get lucky, and other companies (like Trader Joe’s!) will see a big-name business open in Hoboken and it will encourage them to also open in Hoboken. Doesn’t the new building at Lipton Tea have an enormous amount of retail space in the base of the tower? That would be a good location for Trader Joe’s – the parking garage is right there and plenty of apartments surround it – they would be quite successful in a location like that. Being at the end of Hoboken, they would probably pull in shoppers from nearby areas as well. The only negative is if I can walk to a Trader Joe’s I’d weigh 500 lbs by the end of the year lmfao

As long as the PARKING sucks in Hoboken, ALL of the businesses are doomed. Anthropologie isn’t going to shut down the other stores in Hoboken, the parking authority and the mayor are going to.
