Council President Mason on Ian Sacs Incident

3/25/2011:

Hoboken City Council President Beth Mason responds to yesterday’s altercation / arrest involving Parking & Transportation Czar Ian Sacs.

Mason troubled by city’s handling of Sacs altercation

Statement from Council President Beth Mason

“The actions taken yesterday by Mayor Dawn Zimmer and the City Administration in response to an altercation between a city employee and City Parking Authority Director Ian Sacs are very troubling.

To have a city director engage in a physical altercation with one of his subordinates in front of passengers and City Police is unacceptable, and Mr. Sacs physically commandeering a city vehicle and driving it without a proper commercial license is worse, but the Administration’s response was outrageous.

Police led Mr. Sacs away in handcuffs, along with the city employee, and then Mr. Sacs received legal counsel in a jail cell from two lawyers, including the City’s Corporation Counsel, while the city employee received no legal counsel.

The Corporation Counsel’s responsibility is to represent the City, not serve as Mr. Sacs’ personal attorney.

The Mayor’s decision to suspend the employee without pay, while keeping her friend, Mr. Sacs, on the payroll with free legal advice from the Corporation Counsel, goes beyond any reasonable bounds of fairness. Apparently, the Mayor has already decided that Mr. Sacs is absolutely right and the city employee is absolutely wrong. That is the role we have entrusted to our legal system for more than 200 years and I am shocked that Mayor Zimmer would so easily trounce anyone’s civil liberties.

Lastly, the Mayor has called for a “third-party investigation” into this matter. Before she spends any more tax dollars to defend Mr. Sacs, she should let the Hoboken Police conduct a thorough and objective investigation and let our courts decide where to affix responsibility for this ugly incident.”

So now the City claims this is a human resource matter after already accusing the more junior employee of Violence. You think that there’s a chance of fairness at this angle either. More bobbing and weaving what the administration writers are well known for.

Consider the flip side of this is a Hostile Work environment that driver was likely subject to. See what an HR expert thinks of workplace investigation in the attached clip…

Truth I wish you well in your quest for the truth and facts but face it in most disputes you will not get at the facts.

animal lover.Your on the money ..with this one, I have never heard of a gag order in regard to free speach as long as one dosen’t go around with a bull horn and demean laconia lilly at chtty hall.Soon they will burn the books at the liibrary.A mayor leads but does not rule..Had not roberts combined the parking authority with the city we would today not have this Pansy out of control. All his inavations and ideas in regard to improving methods and hi tech ideas ..Europe is way ahead of us in that area.contrare there is a hostile work environment in the HPU..They are swimming with sharks who report in on the cell phones in the evening..There was no violence as was said by the dawn propergander crew..Violence is when some one gets cracked good if another puts his hands on him…This adopted child is a reflection on The Mayor and her cohorts I wonder why the aclu and Rev Al have not made their presense known. 😈
So now the City claims this is a human resource matter after already accusing the more junior employee of Violence. What ever happened to the Buddy System between employees?
“why did you park here and leave it”!? 💡
answer…
OKAY let me watch it til you come back, then we can talk about legal
places to put it.
Okay, Boss, THANKS!

Common courtesy between workers whose goal is to improve this city,
and no need to fight about it or attend ethics classes where videos of friends
who are now incarcerated are shown. Sad Hoboken…no common ground…..

The Boss is a ‘mentor’ but not a ‘buddy’ since he/she is responsible to get work done by others and usually according to a standard operating procedure. I can have no opinion on the recent incident until more facts are available. 💡
What ever happened to the Buddy System between employees?“why did you park here and leave it”!? answer…OKAY let me watch it til you come back, then we can talk about legalplaces to put it.Okay, Boss, THANKS!Common courtesy between workers whose goal is to improve this city, and no need to fight about it or attend ethics classes where videos of friendswho are now incarcerated are shown. Truth you might grow old waiting for the facts. Clearly there is a factual dispute and it becomes a matter of law. But the issue here is the Mayor not only interfering in the unbiased application of the law but also applying cronyism at best and at worst discrimination.
The Boss is a ‘mentor’ but not a ‘buddy’ since he/she is responsible to get work done by others and usually according to a standard operating procedure. The way I see it this whole thing has already been tainted by the City and their is no way the Police can do their job at this point. The state or County Judge should step in for fairness sake. If the Police seem to have their hands tied in s much as they just went through some hostile negotiations w the City.

Couldnt agree more…It’s about time our governor stops flying around the country, trying to improve his national profile so he can run for higher office & start asking some tough questions…
The way I see it this whole thing has already been tainted by the City and their is no way the Police can do their job at this point. Really? The Governor needs to get involved? Their are 566 municipalities in NJ and he is going to get involved in a disagreement between a city transportation director and a shuttle driver?? You know there is important things that go on outside of Hoboken.
Couldnt agree more…It’s about time our governor stops flying around the country, trying to improve his national profile so he can run for higher office & start asking some tough questions…
Actually, the police would likely need to bring up the conflict in a suit. See the case of the Mayor of Edison firing the police Chief. Mayors need to not meddle in police affairs.
Really? The Governor needs to get involved? Mason is right to be troubled, though Mason herself troubles me.
