Kids’ Drum Circles

Mile Square Circle:

Two Hoboken parents are bringing the first-ever Kids’ Drum Circles to the Mile-Square City! Dave Lambert and Pamela Strell have teamed up to form Mile Square Circle, with the aim of creating joyful circles of families and friends through the ancient and primitive art of drumming. Currently they’re offering two six-week sessions at Creative Little Monsters (on the corner of 12th and Park): a circle for parents and children on Mondays at 4:00, and a kids-only circle for 7, 8 and 9-year-olds on Wednesdays at 4:00. The circles will focus partly on traditional African rhythms and partly on creative drumming–each drummer expressing his or her own inner rhythms over the course of the six weeks. The next sessions start the week of Feb 26th.

The 40-minute circles will be conducted by Dave Lambert, who has been drumming for years and recently began studying West African drumming with Laura Jackson in NYC. Dave and Pamela recently purchased a dozen djembes from Senegal so that every participant could have his or her own drum to play. If there’s room and a drum available, drop-ins are always welcome!

In the near future, Mile Square Circle plans to develop more circles that will be open to teens and adults, and that will delve into the rhythms of India, Asia, South America, the Caribbean, and elsewhere. They’ll have drums and percussion instruments for sale from around the world.

To sign up for classes, contact Creative Little Monsters at info@creativelittlemonsters.com or call Pamela at 201-401-1936.

The end of what? Narrow-minded class distinctions, perhaps? One can only hope.[/quote]

I was sorta kidding, but let me clarify.

It was directed specifically at these types:

“Hon… Chad…? Did you hear? Those beatnik, hippie types that we look down on and make fun of are having a drum circle. Sounds like its gonna be the new trend among the Hoboken Super Moms (H.S.M). Maybe I should run over to Wee Beasties and pick up that new $400.00 Jean Bourget Bohemian outfit for Bashie (Sebastian) and Milo. Wouldn’t want to be out of the loop.”

Better?

I’ve always thought that the theramin was a more useful instrument for children.

No, the end of any hope that Idiocricy isn’t a movie based on reality. 🙂
