Question for the hive mind: what’s the best cable modem I can buy that will work with Optimum? Anything south of $100?

I recently bought an old Motorola Surfboard 4100 to replace the one I had been paying 7 dollars for every month for 10 years .Cost $ 10.The newer versions cost $89-120 dollars .
This old one works just fine and I plugged my airport into it and Wifi works just fine too.
Question for the hive mind: what’s the best cable modem I can buy that will work with Optimum? Anything south of $100?
Anyone ever try using the wifi hotspots Cablevision supposedly has all over town? Debating getting the iPad w/o 3G b/c I don’t see myself using it in random places that don’t have wifi close at hand. I might want to use it in town at a park, the pier, or a few other places in town but Cablevision has wifi hotspots according to their website that cover most of Hoboken.

I strongly dislike Cablevision. That being said, I have a question regarding the service I have. I have online service and basic cable with an HD TV with internal tuner. If I went to Cablevision and discontinued my service for Basic Cable and kept the internet, would I continue to get the television channels since I have the Online? I would figure they still have to send me a signal?

Thanks.

Cablevision does suck! I totally understand why they have the bars on the windows between the customer and the hoodrats, I mean “customer service reps” who work at the hoboken office…if it weren’t for those bars I probably would have been hauled to jail for kicking someone’s @ss. Instead, I just headed straight to a bar after dealing with those morons! 😈
