Spoken Word Series

spokenword.gifTo start off the New Year of The Center for the Performing Arts at DeBaun Auditorium’s Spoken Word Series, curator David Vincenti has chosen two female artists to be featured on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 3pm – Valerie Schermerhorn and Sintora Regina Vanderhorst. The Spoken Word Series is presented monthly at Symposia Bookstore, 510 Washington St. in Hoboken, NJ.

The Spoken Word Series readings take place at Symposia Bookstore, 510 Washington St., in Hoboken, NJ. Symposia is the only used bookstore in Hoboken and has great prices for used books, wireless Internet access, and lots of events every week. This is the third year The Center for the Performing Arts at DeBaun Auditorium and Symposia have teamed up to co-produce the series and with each reading more and more people are introduced the this wonderful book shop and the work of some superb artists.

Valerie Schermerhorn
is a poet and writer living in Greenwood Lake, New York. She is a member of a writing group, which meets in Ringwood, New Jersey and is currently working on a book about children who are adopted when they are older and how this informs the rest of their lives. Valerie was adopted when she was fourteen years old and her work often reflects the grace that brought her through so far.

Sintora Regina Vanderhorst is a Native American (Mohawk) poet, artist and writer. She is the founder and publisher of The Village Muse and The Staten Island Muse, both of which are the link to those places where entertainment and intellectual discourse can be found. Sintora works for Peoples Education in Saddle Brook, New Jersey and moonlights as a freelance graphic designer. Her illustrations have appeared in the Phonics and Math series of educational textbooks published by William H. Sadlier, Inc., the Oxford University Press educational series, Parent Guide and other magazines. Sintora’s poetry has been published in Words volumes 16, 17, 19, 22 and 23 and she has just released Tainted Greenwood Lake Love: poetry & prose by Sintora R. Vanderhorst. She has read poetry at the Annual St. Catherine of Bologna Art & Poetry Exhibit; Generations, Poets on the Patio, Jackie Pesante Poetry Slam, The Real McCoy, and Cafe Verboten.

Valerie and Sintora will read from their collections and then the microphone will open to the public to share their work. Although it is not necessary to pre-register to attend the event, those interested in sharing their work during the open-microphone portion are asked to sign up at 2:45pm, prior to the event’s official start time. Open microphone participants are asked to limit their work to five minutes per person.

The next Spoken Word Artist will be Brian Bradford on March 4, 2007 at 3pm.

Celebrating its Fifth Anniversary, the Spoken Word Series honors poetry and prose alike. Each featured writer will read selections from their collection and then the microphone will open to the public to share their work. This series is at 3pm on the first Sunday of each month at Symposia Bookstore, 510 Washington St., Hoboken. All events in this series are open to the public and free – with a suggested donation of $3.

Past artists who have been featured include: Diane Lockward, Sander Zulauf, Deena Linett, George Harvilla, Meg Kearney, BJ Ward, Faith Vicinanza, Joel Lewis, Renee Ashley, John-Paul Marotta, postmidnight, Edmund Conti, Peter Murphy, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Laura Boss, Jack Wiler, Mike Fleming, Tina Kelly and David Messineo.
