Best of NJ

njmonthlylogo.gifThanks to Chris for sending the link!

In this month’s NJ Monthly Magazine, they ran a “Best of NJ” piece. Hoboken was noted for “Best bang for your buck” (both a fancy bang and cheap bang). Cucharamama and La Isla respectively.

It’s no surprise that Hoboken was also on the “Worst” list with, you guessed it, PARKING.

Read the Hoboken excerpts below, plus click this link to read the rest. Anyone try the other places they mentioned?

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK (FANCY)
At Cucharamama, Hoboken’s Maricel Presilla whips up brilliant pan-Latin cuisine worthy of the late New York Times writer R.W. Apple’s praise (which wasn’t easy to get).

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK (CHEAP EATS)
Speaking of Hoboken: La Isla is hands-down the best Cuban diner north of Miami, thanks to chef Omar Giner’s hearty, yummy fare.

PARKING
Hoboken. It’s Manhattan, only everybody has a car (even though they commute via mass transit). Fun.

I will say their entree duck dish was fabulous, but priced about as much as you can every charge for duck even in NYC. The cocktails, which were good, were also priced like you were at the Hotel Gansevoort. I am by no means adverse to dropping 175 on a meal from time to time, but not one where there are no particularly expensive ingredients involved.

I can’t even imagine how someone can think its good “bang for your buck” since you have to order about 4 little things per person if you don’t want to leave hungry. Its not that the prices are insane in and of themselves…but the portions are miniscule.

You are NOT the only one. My wife and I thought the same thing…more expensive than zafra and not quite as good. Nothing was bad, but nothing we had impressed us much either, and boy was it expensive. The most impressive thing about the place is the space, its very pretty. But yeah, I would go to zafra 10 times out of 10 instead based on the pricing. I will say we went with two zafra veterans who liked it much more than we did.

I must be the only person in Hoboken or NJ who is not impressed w/ Cucharamama..I have been there twice..thought the place was way overpriced & I left hungry both times..I think Zafra is much better than Cucharamama. 😀
