They handled Blizzards better in 1899

12/30/2010:

110 years later things get worse? How?

Hoboken411 reader Chris sent this link in from Shorpy today – depicting how they handled one of the worst blizzards in recorded history over in NYC. They dumped the damn snow in the river.

Today, over-zealous “environmentalists” ban that kind of action – much to the detriment of the well-being of everyone. I’ll bet $100 that more people get injured or die from the fact that snow impedes progress on the ground – than whatever junk gets tossed into the river. Oh well.

So long as the snow is fresh, I don’t see a problem with its dumping into the river.

Humans cause a lot more damage to rivers via the crap we eat and array of medications/drugs we consume. A little something to chew on the next time you take a poop.

Happy new year!

EPA does not have snow dumping rules and regs. New Jersey does however, in the past 2003 and 1996 New Jersey declared a State of Emergency and the Governor allowed cities to dump snow into the rivers. Governor Christie has the power to allow it and should be petitioned to do so if this snow does not melt soon enough.

Because the plowed snow is full of all sorts of pollutants like salt and other deicing chemicals, and motor oil.

Doesn’t Hoboken have a snow melting machine that the snow can be dumped into? Someone told me they saw it being used on Washington Street.

What is the big deal about snow dumping? What elements is snow made of that is so bad for the dirty stinky river?? There are bodies every now and than, one or two planes and over the years a dozen or so cars.. Really, why can’t we dump the snow in the water, its clean snow …?? Are these the same folks who will not let you chop down the trees that are ripping the sidewalks apart??? 12th and Bloomfield is an accident waiting to happen..

Happy New Year everyone !

The snow scraped off of the roads and sidewalks is filled with dog crap, cigarette butts, motor oil, empty beer cans, and other random garbage strewn about Hoboken on a daily basis. Hardly clean snow. Might as well empty the street cleaners into the Hudson while you’re at it. Maybe if it was just Hoboken dumping it wouldn’t be so bad, but if every city along the Jersey coastline dumped into the Hudson every winter it would definitely become a problem. There’s already enough trash down the shore as it is. [quote comment=”201474″]What is the big deal about snow dumping? What elements is snow made of that is so bad for the dirty stinky river?? Salt?? Who had salt down as clean up started at 4pm, folks hadn’t even had paths at this point. The City didn’t have an ounce of it on the streets due to not having any in stock lol .. its was pure clean snow..
If things were done ASAP there should be no issues, but I do agree too that after 4 days shame on them for such a bad plan, let the Solar Energy now flood the city streets with melting snow unless that was the plan, let the sun take care of it.. Happy New Year All, we are all in this together 😉 [quote comment=”201489″]The snow scraped off of the roads and sidewalks is filled with dog crap, cigarette butts, motor oil, empty beer cans, and other random garbage strewn about Hoboken on a daily basis. luckey girl agreed..In those days 20 years ago no model cities no pleasure parks or redone pier a b c…Its only snow..follow the garbarge stow and see what they dump 10 miles out .maybe seven miles out..Luckey history tells us of forwarning…On Dec 7th 1941 the us intelligence broke the japanese code..ambassador Grew sent fdr a warning of impending attack either at clark air force base or Pearl..A midget sub was sunk ..150 blips were seen on radar and the boys were told to close down for the day..impending snow reports a week ahead may not be an air attack but an attack of snow just the same..shh its all in the past as well as the snowfall..Pray this is only DEC…Betcha all the zimmerets will not even peep in regard to the storm ..As I said birds of a feather..Pray for warm weather..Reformers wait untill the bill comes in for the snow removel…ahhh vey 😛 [quote comment=”201474″]What is the big deal about snow dumping?
