Complicated parking garage rates gouge residents
I’ve mentioned before that the Hoboken Parking Utility is becoming more complicated than a bill from a typical cell phone carrier. Seems that the city is creating stipulations in their so-called “bargain” rates that cause many residents to pay steeper fees than originally thought. Here’s one resident’s experience at a municipal parking garage today:
“The city’s website clearing says the following:
UPDATE: Reduced rate garage parking has been extended. Residents parked in Garages B & D may remain there until Tuesday, 8am for the same $5 rate.
So yesterday I dug my car out of the street and put it in Garage B around 6pm under the assumption that I would only have to pay $5 if I took it out by 8 am today. When I went to get my car this morning at 7:30am I was told that the $5 discount is only if you park your car after 8pm and leave before 8am. I explained to him about the reduced rate the city was offering because of the snow and said that only ran through 4pm on Monday. I said that they extended it and the garage employee sent me over to Garage D to talk to them about it. There they told me the same thing, it only applied if you parked after 8pm.
The gentleman at Garage D also told me that the city came in this morning to get boots and that they were going to begin booting cars today.
Anyway after expecting to pay $5 to park per the City’s website, I ended up having to give in and pay $30 for the night. Not sure if the city has incorrect information on their website or if the parking deck is not giving the correct discount but I’m sure I’m not the only one that ran into this problem.
