Blizzard Parking Garage scam

Complicated parking garage rates gouge residents

I’ve mentioned before that the Hoboken Parking Utility is becoming more complicated than a bill from a typical cell phone carrier. Seems that the city is creating stipulations in their so-called “bargain” rates that cause many residents to pay steeper fees than originally thought. Here’s one resident’s experience at a municipal parking garage today:

“The city’s website clearing says the following:

UPDATE: Reduced rate garage parking has been extended. Residents parked in Garages B & D may remain there until Tuesday, 8am for the same $5 rate.

So yesterday I dug my car out of the street and put it in Garage B around 6pm under the assumption that I would only have to pay $5 if I took it out by 8 am today. When I went to get my car this morning at 7:30am I was told that the $5 discount is only if you park your car after 8pm and leave before 8am. I explained to him about the reduced rate the city was offering because of the snow and said that only ran through 4pm on Monday. I said that they extended it and the garage employee sent me over to Garage D to talk to them about it. There they told me the same thing, it only applied if you parked after 8pm.

The gentleman at Garage D also told me that the city came in this morning to get boots and that they were going to begin booting cars today.

Anyway after expecting to pay $5 to park per the City’s website, I ended up having to give in and pay $30 for the night. Not sure if the city has incorrect information on their website or if the parking deck is not giving the correct discount but I’m sure I’m not the only one that ran into this problem.

Thanks,
-Adam

I’m confused… isn’t that the everyday deal? In after 8pm out by 8am? I am lucky enough to have parking but I recall my sister taking advantage of this all the time.

The deal started Sunday at 4pm and was through Wed. 8am. And actually I got a press release from Dawn Zimmer that now says the parking is extended through Monday at 8am.[quote comment=”201425″]I’m confused… isn’t that the everyday deal? The same thing happened to me at Garage B. I parked my car from Sunday at 4pm through Tuesday 8am. I put my ticket into the machine and instead of $10, it came up as $60. So I asked the parking attendant and he told me to walk over to 215 Hudson and speak with the supervisor, Joe Scardino. I told him the situation and he told me that since I didn’t get my car out by 8pm Monday night, that the rate was no longer in effect. I told him that I had specifically called on Monday at 11:30am to ask this question and I was told it would be fine. He told me he was the only one there all day on Monday and he never spoke to me. He is a liar. I took his card and told him that I would be contacting the parking utility to put in a complaint. Lo and behold not only do I see this post, but the Hoboken city website now says the $5 parking was extended through 8am Wednesday morning! I called the parking utility this morning to ask how to rectify this situation and they told me to call good ol’ Joe up and that he would handle it. So I called him and explained the situation and he told me that the parking rate was not extended. I told him I had it up right in front of me and that it in fact was extended until… Read more »

The city’s screwed up website still has 3 different dates posted in 3 different places for the $5/day parking: -“UPDATE:Reduced rate garage parking has been extended. Residents parked in Garages B & D may remain there until Tuesday, 8am for the same $5 rate.” -“Residents parked in Garages B (28 2nd Street) and D (215 Hudson Street) may remain there until Wednesday, 8am for the same $5 rate.” -“The Hoboken Parking Utility is extending the courtesy to Hoboken residents with Residential parking permits to keep their vehicles in Garages B and D at the reduced Resident rate of $5.00 from 4pm on Sunday to 8am on Monday.”[quote comment=”201393”]The same thing happened to me at Garage B.
