Is anything safe from theft these days?

11/18/2010:

Things disappear in Hoboken!

One Hoboken411 reader sent this in a few weeks ago, having found it humorous.

It definitely seems to typify the state of affairs at times, in this City where manhole covers go missing and people remarkably take almost any “junk” you leave outside. In this case, I guess their motives are curious. Maybe their lid kept ending up on a neighbor’s can, blowing away, getting stolen, or even drifting away in a flood or water main break.

The moral of the story truly is: when you have anything of value in Hoboken, and leave it outside, you gotta lock it up!

^ If so, seems like an awfully expensive choice to use a combination lock when a piece of rope would work just fine.

I don’t think that’s to prevent people from stealing the cover as much as it’s to prevent it from blowing away. We had to do that with ours, because otherwise the wind takes the lids.

I would agree with that. Also, the trash crews fling them like frisbees.

The bins themselves can also be highly mobile since they can’t be tied down. Occasionally ours go missing and I might find them across the street or a couple of doors down. Last month one migrated an entire block and who knows where the other went – convalescing in Weehawken for all I know.

Somebody’s loss is my neighbors’ gain. Based on the number painted on the side it journeyed far to be at their service.
