New Friends of Mike Lenz
Mike Lenz wants to be like Peter Cammarano
A popular tidbit of Mike Lenz and his campaign groupies is to note some of his opponent’s supporters were among the 6000+ who also voted for former Mayor Peter Cammarano.
What Lenz doesn’t want you to know is how many hard-core Cammarano backers are behind him, and why. It’s typical of Lenz’s hypocritical “Do as I say, not as I do” political lifestyle. We haven’t heard quite as much Cammarano talk since Tim Occhipinti dropped this bomb on Lenz at the debate:
Lenz never responded to the statement that he was campaigning with the person “who had the FBI in his kitchen” the morning Cammarano was arrested. PolitickerNJ later identified that person as Cammarano running mate Angel Alicea.
While Mayor Dawn Zimmer quickly dispatched most of Cammarano’s hires, she kept Alicea on board as Public Safety Director. Why? Politics, of course.
Angel Alicea had FBI in kitchen asking questions
Zimmer used to tell people a Public Safety Director wasn’t necessary, yet she keeps Alicea on the payroll. This was a political move designed to secure his support in the 4th ward election. Alicea was a longtime HHA board member who Lenz knew could be useful at election time. Before the FBI knocked on Cammarano’s door, they knocked on Alicea’s. Angel was also standing right behind Cammarano at City Hall when he read his statement declaring his innocence, and refusal to resign.
Between the time of the former Mayor’s arrest, release and resignation, Alicea was seen on TV driving Cammarano around in his city-issued Ford Explorer. Now it’s Lenz and his voter intimidation squad that Alicea is escorting door-to-door.
Peter Cammarano’s infamous post-arraignment umbrella holder, and the rowdy bar owner nicknamed Cammarano’s lapdog are also supporting Lenz. More details after the jump!
Lenz backer Patty Waiters held Cammy umbrella
Perennial failed candidate Patricia Waiters is best known as the person who waited at the Newark Federal Courthouse to hold an umbrella for Cammarano after he was released on bail. Even as most of his support disappeared, Waiters remained a staunch defender of the Mayor.
A former County Corrections Officer who sued for reinstatement, Waiters is a 2nd ward resident who’s been bouncing from politician to politician looking for “help.” Waiters joined the Lenz campaign’s jihad against legal Vote-by-Mail ballots, which is ironic considering the over 300 mail-in votes Waiters received when she ran for school board.
Bar None/Room 84 owner Joe Branco for Mike Lenz
Joe Branco’s bar is no stranger to the Tavern Sheets. The owner of Room 84 (formerly Bar None) has plenty of them outlining incidents at his establishment.
At a political event last week, Hoboken Police Captain and County Freeholder Anthony Romano joked that it was strange to be in Branco’s basement bar without his Police Uniform on! “Stick” Romano works the night shift, and the downtown club is a hotspot for late night trouble from the Jersey Shore set.
Branco was a major Cammarano supporter who flipped to Zimmer in an attempt to gain her support for 6th ward council, and protect his business from heavy City Hall scrutiny. Political Insider columnist Augie Torres wrote that Zimmer arrived at a Jersey City political event this month by Light Rail “but left by Bronco (sic)” as Joe Branco drove her home.
Branco’s car has often been spotted double-parked in front of Lenz campaign headquarters, across the street from Zimmer’s home.
Next time you hear someone sing they want to be like Peter Cammarano, don’t be surprised to look back and see Michael Lenz trying to carry a tune.
