Is it legal to close school exits?

In case of emergency: Find another door

One Hoboken Mom is concerned about this locked exit at the Brandt School:

“I just took this picture today when I went to pick up my son at Brandt. This principle has gone too far. She can’t block a fire exit. Please forward to all parents. Everyone needs to be made aware of what she is doing and how she is putting our children’s lives at risk!!”

I can understand concern about not having all doors open/close so that school can control who comes in and out of building, however i also believe that there is another way to enforce that. The chance of a severe fire/smoke condition seems unlikely but if there was a fire, i think having a blocked exit door is a serious danger, one that i’m not comfortable with, with my children. Regardless, i havent seen the cones since and i’m glad. I dont know the legal ramifications of blocking it but it just doesnt seem like a risk we should take. Hopefully school can come up with a better way to ensure only primary doors are used.

It’s a blocked exit, plain and simple. It is a hazard and can be a disaster in the making since it constituted an encumbrance and obstruction, blocking, tripping and fall hazard. It is the Principal’s job to balance the disciplines of hazard safety and security. I am sure that Fire Marshal Bob Falco will approach this violation firmly (immediate abatement) and also in a public education manner to educate all concerned. 😛

Thank you, truth1, this is an example of sunlight being the best disinfectant, a refrain many people like to use. 411 provided a forum for a concerned parent so the this can be brought to the attention of the fire marshall for the appropriate response you describe. It’s just a deterrent for people going out these doors after dropping off their kids. There’s no security at these doors so they don’t want people sneaking in when someone else leaves.

People are just too lazy to walk to the front doors of the school. When it comes to one person’s convenience versus children’s safety…some people choose convenience.

My bet is that Fire Official/Fire Marshal Rob. Falco will attend to this professionally.
