Historical Declaration Plaques

8/18/2010:

Cannot do anything about it!

For the most part, politicians in jurisdictions across the country change very often – for a good reason. Because most of them are inept – and we need to “keep trying until we get it right.”

Unfortunately the “keep trying” part is a process that is never ending!

But history is something we cannot change. And while some people like altering history (or try to erase, diffuse and spin) – what was is what was. For instance – this plaque near the fishing pier on Sinatra Drive (near the skate park). Here we have a sign that reads:

“The Waterway and Fishing Pier are built by the City of Hoboken Mayor and Council for the enjoyment of all Hoboken residents.” It lists a former Mayor (David Roberts) and nine City Council Members at the time. Mind you – the Mayor and Council had nothing to do with the “building” of this pier. Ribbon cutting shovel photos don’t count. Ever.

But 70% of those politicians have moved on (either to Jail, higher office or other endeavors).

My bet is that it drives whatever current administration is in place crazy – because their name isn’t plastered over every city object. Too bad for them – because they cannot change history!

Most people walk by something like this a hundred times without really seeing it-but not Hoboken411! I appreciate this historical “snapshot” and commentary. Though I’m sure many of those whose names are on the plaque (architects included!) wish we would continue to pass by such reminders with blinders on…

411, what’s the beef?

There are at least one or two people on that vanity plate who haven’t yet been shamed out of office and/or convicted.

Shouldn’t we proudly cherish the memory of those valiant but few leaders of yore, at least until that particular section of the waterfront tumbles into the river?

I bet our current crop of bright lights is already planning a $20mm replacement plaque…

If Zimmer had it her way, all Italians and BnR’s would be eliminated from the city.
